Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEnable two-step verification (2SV) from PlayStation Account Management, a PS5, or a PS4. Choose an authenticator app or text message, confirm the code, then save your backup codes somewhere safe. Those codes can help you sign in if you lose access to your phone.
Enable 2-step verification online, on PS5, or on PS4
Sony provides setup through Account Management and both consoles. Menu wording may vary with software updates or regional localization.
On the web
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security.
- Next to 2-step Verification Status, select Edit.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
- For an authenticator app, scan the QR code shown on screen. If you cannot scan it, enter the displayed alphanumeric code in the app. For text messages, enter your mobile number.
- Enter the verification code sent to your selected method and select Activate.
- Save the backup codes displayed during setup. Keep them somewhere secure and accessible if your phone is unavailable.
On PS5
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose an available method and follow the verification prompts to activate it.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup.
On PS4
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose an available method and follow the verification prompts to activate it.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup.
Choose between an authenticator app and SMS
Both methods deliver a code for sign-in. An authenticator app requires access to the configured app and device; SMS requires access to the registered mobile number and a working mobile connection. Sony’s guide names Authy, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator as examples of authenticator apps, not as an endorsement or complete list. Sony’s reviewed guidance does not provide comparative security measurements, so it does not establish that one method is categorically safer.
Your PlayStation account password and sign-in ID remain part of the sign-in process. After you enter them, provide the code from your app or registered phone when prompted. Sony says a code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt; if it expires, select Resend Code. Sony lists prompts for the first sign-in after activation, signing in after manually signing out, resetting your account password, and changing your sign-in ID (email address) or online ID.

Save and use your backup codes
Backup codes are a recovery option if you cannot use your usual verification method. After setup, store them somewhere private and secure. If you can still sign in, Sony says you can find them in Account Management under Security > Backup Codes. You cannot view them online if you cannot sign in.
Sony’s US troubleshooting instructions state that there are 10 backup codes and each can be used once. At the sign-in prompt, choose the backup-code option and enter one. If you use them all, Sony says you can get new codes by turning off and reactivating 2SV.

Troubleshoot a missing code or lost phone access
If an SMS code does not arrive
- Select Resend Code and wait a few minutes.
- Restart your phone, check that airplane mode is off, and confirm you have mobile signal.
- If network problems continue, contact your mobile carrier.
- If these steps do not resolve the problem, use PlayStation’s Online Assistant.
If you cannot access your phone
Use a saved backup code if you have one. If you have no backup codes and cannot access your phone or mobile number, Sony directs you to the Online Assistant to restore account access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How passkeys differ from 2-step verification
You may see passkeys mentioned in PlayStation’s sign-in guidance. A passkey is a separate sign-in experience, not a step in the 2SV setup described above. Sony’s US guide covers passkey sign-in on PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. It says most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later support passkeys, though device and browser behavior can vary. The reviewed guidance does not establish that every account configuration can use passkeys and 2SV simultaneously.

- PHISHING-RESISTANT 2FA: Cryptographically binds to real domains, making phishing attacks impossible unlike SMS codes or authenticator apps.
- 3-SIDE CAPACITIVE TOUCH: Tap the end, left, or right side to authenticate, so it works in any orientation or crowded USB port.
- MULTI-COLOR LED INDICATOR: Blue means ready, blinking blue means tap now, green means success, and red means error for instant status feedback.
- IP68 WATERPROOF & BATTERY-FREE: Crush-resistant one-piece construction survives daily carry on a keychain or in a bag for years without any batteries.
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works with Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, AWS, and any FIDO2 / U2F / WebAuthn service, storing up to 100 passkeys.
For 2SV, Sony describes the benefit this way: “By activating 2-Step Verification, we’ll add a second layer of security to your account.”
