Before uploading a child’s photo to an AI app, check whether it leaves the device, how long the service keeps it, whether it creates or reuses face-derived data, and how you can delete the data. If the app does not clearly answer those questions, choose a less revealing workflow—or do not upload the image.
What to check before uploading a child’s photo
Start with the app’s current privacy notice and look for specific answers to these questions. A general promise to protect privacy is not enough to establish what happens to an image.
- Processing: Does the app process the photo on your device, or upload it to a server? Prefer on-device processing when the provider clearly confirms it and it suits the task. Opening a photo from your phone does not, by itself, prove that processing stays on the device.
- Retention: How long are the original image and any face-derived data kept? Look for separate retention details rather than assuming that deleting a project or account removes every copy.
- Reuse: Does the service use uploads for AI training, model improvement, product development, or human review? Do not assume either that it does or does not; check the app’s current disclosures.
- Sharing: Which service providers or other recipients may receive the image or related data?
- Deletion and control: Can you restrict access, opt out of reuse, access data, or request deletion? Check whether the process covers stored photos and derived data, not only the account.
- Metadata: Does the service retain embedded information such as location data?
UNICEF’s 2025 Guidance on AI and children includes protecting children’s data and privacy among its requirements for child-centered AI. The practical questions above help you assess whether a particular service gives you enough information and control to use it.
Reduce what the app can access
Share only what the task needs
If the app offers a choice, select only the image you intend to edit instead of granting broad access to your photo library. Avoid uploading a child’s identifiable image when a text prompt, a non-identifying image, or another workflow can achieve the same result.

Limit location data
Deny location permission unless a feature genuinely needs it. When feasible, remove embedded location metadata before sending or posting the image. Metadata removal does not make a photo anonymous: the child may still be recognizable in the image itself.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office recommends high privacy defaults, data minimization, limited sharing, and geolocation off by default in its Age Appropriate Design Code guidance. These are useful privacy principles, but the code is UK guidance, not a law that applies everywhere.

Why face analysis calls for extra care
A photo and biometric data are related but not identical. An app may simply store or edit an image, or it may analyze a face and create or process face-derived data. The privacy notice should explain what the service does; do not assume that every AI photo app creates a biometric template.
UNICEF’s biometrics guidance highlights particular risks for children and notes that many biometric technologies were designed around adults, which may affect how well they perform with children. If an app performs facial analysis, weigh whether that feature is necessary and whether its data handling is clear.

What U.S. COPPA guidance says about children’s photos
In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to operators of child-directed websites and online services, including apps, that collect personal information from children under 13. It also applies to certain general-audience services that have actual knowledge they are collecting personal information from children under 13. The FTC includes a child’s image or voice in a photo, video, or audio recording among personal information under COPPA. A name does not have to be attached for the image to matter under that rule.
For covered services, FTC guidance describes requirements to notify parents and obtain approval before collecting, using, or disclosing a child’s personal information, along with parental access and deletion rights. COPPA concerns covered operators and online collection; it is not a universal rule for every family upload, every app, or every country. A practical checklist for parents
- Read the app’s current privacy notice. Find its disclosures about image uploads, facial analysis, retention, sharing, AI or product-improvement uses, and deletion.
- Choose on-device processing only when the provider clearly confirms it and it meets your needs.
- Grant access to a selected photo or a limited library where your device allows it; deny unnecessary location access.
- Remove embedded location metadata before sending or posting a photo when feasible, while remembering that the image itself may identify your child.
- Use a less identifying image, a text prompt, or another workflow if it can do the job without your child’s photo.
- If you request deletion, follow the service’s stated process and keep a record. Check whether it covers images and derived data as well as the account.
- Review the policy again when the app changes features or updates its terms.
