Game Pass does not use one universal download or update switch across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Use the console controls for a console, and the Xbox app and Windows settings for a PC. The options and wording can change between app versions and console interfaces.

How do I keep games and apps up to date on Xbox consoles?
On the console, inspect the Updates & downloads area for controls to keep games and apps current. The exact path and labels can vary, so follow the wording shown on your console rather than relying on a menu path copied from another generation or software version. Microsoft’s support search results also associate automatic installation with using the console set as your home Xbox; check your current home Xbox setting if you expect games to install automatically. How do I choose where Xbox app games install on PC?
The Xbox app has offered a way to choose a game’s install location and manage installed games, including moving or repairing them. Xbox Wire described these features in an announcement dated November 18, 2021; current Xbox app versions may use different wording or offer different options. Check capacity before downloading
Confirm that the selected drive has enough free space for the game before installing. The available evidence does not establish a universal storage requirement for Game Pass games, so use the space shown for the specific title in the app rather than assuming all downloads need the same amount.
External drives are a capacity option, not a guarantee
Xbox Wire’s 2021 announcement warned that users might encounter problems launching games installed on an external drive. Treat an external drive as one possible way to add PC storage, not as a guarantee that every game will install or run reliably from it. The cited announcement does not endorse a drive model or establish compatibility for every current game and configuration.

Does Microsoft Store automatic updating update every Game Pass game?
No single conclusion about every installed game follows from the Microsoft Store setting. Turning on automatic app updates in Microsoft Store controls updates for Store apps; it should not be treated as a universal switch for all games installed through the Xbox app. Microsoft’s instructions are at Turn on automatic app updates.

For games supported on your device and available to your account, Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you stream rather than download and install. It can help when local storage is limited, but it is not a substitute for an install option on every title or in every region and plan. - Console: Review Updates & downloads and check which console is set as your home Xbox if you expect automatic installation.
- PC: Confirm the install location in the Xbox app and check available space on that drive.
