Hall effect sticks also use contactless magnetic sensing, but rely on a different physical effect. Both can reduce drift caused by wear at the sensing track; neither guarantees drift-free operation. In practice, the controller’s mechanics, calibration, firmware and electronics matter alongside the sensor type.
How TMR thumbsticks work
TMR stands for tunneling magnetoresistance. A magnetic tunnel junction has magnetic layers separated by an insulating barrier. Its electrical resistance changes with the layers’ magnetic orientation. As the stick moves, the sensor detects a change in the magnetic field or orientation, and the controller’s electronics convert that signal into a stick position.
GameSir describes its TMR sensor structure as “dual magnetic layers + ultra-thin insulating layer.” TDK describes its TMR angle and linear sensors as contactless sensors for measuring position and angle. GameSir’s technology page and TDK InvenSense’s TMR overview explain the respective manufacturers’ implementations.
Traditional potentiometer sticks detect movement through a contact wiper rubbing a resistive track. Magnetic sensors do not need that contact at the sensing element, removing one wear mechanism associated with drift. Other parts of a controller can still wear, shift, become contaminated or fail.

TMR vs. Hall effect: what is different?
| Comparison | TMR | Hall effect | What it means for players |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensing principle | Resistance changes with magnetic orientation in a tunnel-magnetoresistance sensor. | A voltage response to a magnetic field. | Both use magnetic sensing without a potentiometer wiper track; the physical sensing effect differs. |
| Wear-related drift | Non-contact sensing reduces wear at the sensing element. | Shares the same broad non-contact advantage. | Neither technology rules out drift or other input problems. |
| Sensitivity and precision | Manufacturers promote high sensitivity. TDK claims over 10× higher sensitivity for its TMR sensors. | A mature magnetic-sensing approach used in controllers. | TDK’s sensor-level figure is not proof that every TMR stick is more accurate than every Hall effect stick. |
| Power | Manufacturers promote low power use. | Depends on the particular sensor and circuit. | TMR may suit wireless devices, but the sensor label alone does not establish longer controller battery life. |
| Feel and setup | SCUF says its TMR implementation retains a familiar feel. | SCUF describes its Hall effect implementation as quick and snappy, and says some players may need an adjustment period. | Feel varies by product and is affected by its mechanics and setup. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the exact controller and module. | Also depends on the exact controller and module. | A sensor type does not establish that a replacement module physically or electrically fits. |
TDK’s “over 10× higher sensitivity” claim describes its TMR sensor offering, not a controlled comparison of finished thumbsticks. GameSir lists its own TMR section with 12-bit resolution, under-1-ms sensor response time, 5+ million cycles and under-1-mA operating current; its Hall effect section also lists 5+ million cycles. These are GameSir’s stated specifications, not independently validated comparisons, and the page does not establish a shared test method for comparing the cycle figures. GameSir’s technology page and TDK’s overview provide the manufacturers’ claims.
A controller overview reports similar resolution for TMR and Hall effect modules and notes that the controller’s MCU sampling also affects accuracy. Treat that as context, not a universal rule: modules and controller designs vary. There is no basis here for claiming a general TMR advantage in real-world accuracy, latency or battery life across controllers.

Does TMR or Hall effect prevent stick drift?
Both technologies avoid the potentiometer wiper-track wear mechanism, so they can reduce wear-related drift risk. They do not make the whole stick assembly immune to problems. Impact damage, debris, calibration errors and component failures can still cause drift or other incorrect inputs. SCUF makes this distinction when describing its Endurance thumbsticks. SCUF’s explanation of Endurance thumbsticks covers both the wear benefit and remaining failure possibilities.
The sensor is only one part of the input chain. Spring centering and stick geometry affect where the stick rests and how it moves; calibration and firmware dead zones affect how that movement is reported; analog-to-digital conversion and controller sampling affect how the signal is read. Game settings can further change the response a player feels. A magnetic sensor cannot compensate for every limitation in those other parts.

Which controllers use TMR thumbsticks?
Manufacturer pages identify several examples, but features and platform support should be checked against the exact model listing because product lineups can change.
- SCUF Omega: SCUF identifies this PS5/PC controller as having TMR thumbsticks as standard.
- SCUF Valor Pro Wireless: SCUF lists TMR thumbsticks for this Xbox Series X|S/PC controller.
- SCUF Valor Pro Wired: SCUF lists Hall effect thumbsticks for this Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC controller.
- GameSir Cyclone 2: GameSir identifies it as a featured TMR controller; its broader range includes both TMR and Hall effect technologies.
See SCUF’s product and technology information and GameSir’s technology page for the manufacturers’ descriptions. These examples show that sensor type is a model-specific feature, not a guarantee of compatibility across a brand’s entire lineup.

What to check before buying
Compare complete controllers rather than treating “TMR” and “Hall effect” as standardized performance grades. Use the features you will actually rely on:
- Platform support: Check the exact console, PC or mobile compatibility, including any model or connection-mode limits.
- Connection options: Confirm whether the controller supports wired, wireless or both modes.
- Feel and adjustment: Look for stick resistance, centering and calibration options, and check return terms if you cannot try it first.
- Firmware and input behavior: Check for relevant settings and support for the controller’s firmware, polling and calibration.
- Other features: Compare buttons, paddles and other controls that matter to your games.
- Ownership: Consider warranty, repair options and current price alongside the sensor specification.
Can you replace a stick with a TMR module?
Only if the replacement is designed for the exact controller. A generic TMR module is not automatically compatible with controllers that use Hall effect or potentiometer sticks—or even with other models from the same manufacturer.

Before ordering, identify the controller’s exact model and revision, then verify the replacement’s dimensions, electrical interface and calibration requirements. Check whether installation requires soldering and whether you are equipped to do that work. A secondary TMR joystick controller overview likewise advises matching modules to specific controllers; the controller or module manufacturer’s compatibility documentation should take priority.
