1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo get better at Nintendo Switch Sports, focus on timing, positioning and the cues the game gives you—not on swinging as hard or as often as possible. Nintendo’s guidance covers Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Chambara, Badminton, Bowling and Golf. Basketball is also in the current eight-sport roster, but Nintendo’s cited tip articles do not provide a Basketball-specific technique.
Start with timing and positioning, not bigger movements
Several sports reward meeting the ball or shuttlecock at a particular point in its path. In Tennis, that means the ball’s apex; in Volleyball, syncing your jump with the set; in Badminton, swinging as the shuttlecock starts to descend. Soccer is more about anticipating where the ball is going and getting into position before it arrives.

These are Nintendo’s published pointers, not guarantees of a win. Motion-control results can depend on the situation and mode, so follow the prompts shown in your game.
How to improve at each sport
Tennis: time the serve at the ball’s highest point
Nintendo recommends striking the ball when your character’s toss reaches its highest point for a faster serve. Start your swing slightly early so the racket meets the ball at that apex. The key is the timing cue, not making the largest possible swing; practice helps you recognize the peak consistently.

Volleyball: jump as your teammate sets
For a quicker spike, jump slightly before your teammate sets the ball. The goal is for you and the ball to meet in the air at about the same time. A “Quick!” indicator may confirm the timing.
For players looking beyond the basic timing advice, Nintendo’s version 1.2.0 update notes describe two additional moves: a Slide Attack, performed by moving the stick left and right after bumping the ball, and a Rocket Serve, performed by tossing the ball high and hitting it at the apex.
Soccer: read the minimap and pass in four-on-four
- Move to where the ball is headed. Use the minimap to anticipate the play instead of chasing only the ball’s current position.
- Pass in four-on-four. Hold ZR while kicking to pass to a teammate.
- Cover the goal when needed. If nobody else is defending, fall back rather than leaving the goal exposed.
The Leg Strap is used in some Soccer play, but it is not required for every Soccer mode. Nintendo Support explains how to select Leg-Strap Mode; use the on-screen options for the mode you are playing.

Chambara: choose a weapon and swing deliberately
Nintendo describes three weapons with different strengths: the Sword has the strongest standard strike, the Charge Sword can unleash a strong Charge Strike after careful guarding, and Twin Swords have a Spinning Strike. Pick according to the kind of attack you want to use.

Random or repeated swings are not a shortcut: Nintendo’s developer guidance warns that random swings make attacks weaker and recommends one deliberate swing at a time. With the Charge Sword, guard just before an incoming attack to try to trigger a Timely Block. Button mashing will not produce that timing-based block.
Badminton: smash as the shuttlecock begins to fall
For a fast smash, make a gentle downward swing as the shuttlecock starts descending from its highest point. To play a Drop Shot, hold ZR or ZL and swing gently. Alternating smashes and drop shots gives your opponent different shots to respond to, rather than the same attack each time.

Bowling: adjust your line, then add gentle spin
Use the on-screen prompts to move or rotate your character before delivery; Nintendo does not specify one universal aiming position. To add spin, gently turn your wrist toward your body before releasing the ball.
The scoring cues can help you understand what each frame is doing: a strike clears all pins on the first roll and scores ten plus bonuses from the next two rolls. A spare clears all ten pins across two rolls and gets a bonus based on the next roll. The game tracks the score for you.
Golf: check the wind and account for shot height
Watch the wind meter and adjust your shot to suit it. Higher shots are affected more by wind; Nintendo notes that wedges and irons tend to hit high. Golf’s Shot Assist, added in version 1.3.0, can help beginners in Play Locally and Play with Friends. In Play Globally, the setting reverts to Normal.

Basketball: know what is—and is not—covered by Nintendo’s tips
Basketball joined all modes in version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024, and Nintendo’s current product page lists it among the game’s eight sports. The official tip articles cited here do not give a Basketball-specific technique, so there is no sourced shooting or dribbling formula to offer. Use the controls and guidance shown in the game rather than treating an unverified technique as official advice.

Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. Nintendo says Pro Controllers are not compatible, and the game does not support Handheld Mode. The physical edition includes a Soccer Leg Strap; Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with that strap. The strap is for some Soccer play, not a requirement for all Soccer modes. Check Nintendo’s product and support pages for the edition and mode details.
Why the eight-sport roster has different advice
The original Nintendo tips article covered six sports. Golf was added in version 1.3.0 on November 28, 2022, and Basketball followed in version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024. Nintendo’s later Golf guidance supplies a wind tip, while the official tip material cited here does not supply a Basketball tactic. The current product page lists eight sports: Tennis, Bowling, Chambara, Soccer, Badminton, Volleyball, Golf and Basketball.
