For a smoother multiplayer race, start with the game’s connection diagnostics and access requirements, then check connection stability, cross-play, and voice chat as separate settings. There is no universal best preset: the right choices depend on the game, platform, network, and who you want to play with.

Start with access and the game’s connection diagnostics

Before changing advanced settings, confirm that online play is available on your account and platform, any required accounts are linked, and any platform subscription the game requires is active. Menu names and requirements vary by game.

For example, PlayStation’s Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 supports online modes including Horizon Open, Horizon Arcade, Horizon Tour, EventLab, The Eliminator, Hide & Seek, Festival Playlist, and Freeroam Convoys. PlayStation says online play requires an internet connection and PlayStation Plus; the first launch also involves signing in to PlayStation and Microsoft accounts. Those requirements apply to this game and platform example, not every racing game.

If the game provides network diagnostics, check them before changing settings. EA’s EA SPORTS FC connection-quality guide describes three distinct signals:

  • Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
  • Ping is the time for data to travel to the game data center and back.
  • Packet loss means packets fail to complete that trip.
  • Jitter is variation in ping over time.

These metrics describe different aspects of connection quality; they are not interchangeable measures of internet speed. EA notes that delays or interruptions in the round trip can cause lag, visual stuttering, or disconnection. Its guide is for EA SPORTS FC, so use your own racing game’s diagnostics and do not treat its terminology as a game-specific cutoff. The available sources do not establish universal ping, packet-loss, or jitter targets.

Choose connection settings for stability, not advertised speed

If cars respond late or move inconsistently, compare the game’s connection readings across sessions and look for unusually high or fluctuating results. A single symptom does not identify the cause: the home network, internet service provider (ISP), route to the game, or game data center may each affect the connection.

When Wi-Fi instability is suspected, a wired connection is a reasonable troubleshooting test if your device supports Ethernet and you can cable it safely. PlayStation recommends checking the connection and, if possible, using a wired connection when troubleshooting voice-chat disconnections. A cable is not a guaranteed fix for latency, ISP or routing problems, or a game-service incident.

If sessions drop or voice chat disconnects, check whether other devices or services on the same network are also having trouble. PlayStation’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance also suggests restarting the console and network equipment. Its port-opening guidance is platform-specific; do not treat router port changes as a universal first step. Follow the relevant platform and ISP instructions only when there is a known need.

Set cross-play around your group and matchmaking needs

Cross-play determines whether players on different platforms can join the same multiplayer pool, subject to the game’s own rules. Leave it enabled when friends use different platforms or when you want access to a wider pool, unless a game-specific competitive or privacy preference gives you a reason to limit it.

In F1 25, EA documents cross-play across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its menu path is Settings > Crossplay. When cross-play is disabled, matchmaking is limited to players on the same platform. This is an F1 25 example, not a universal menu path or cross-play policy. If friends cannot find one another, check this setting and confirm any account-linking requirements before troubleshooting the network.

Separate voice-chat routing from race connectivity

If the race remains connected but teammates cannot hear one another, first check local audio configuration rather than assuming the racing game’s network settings are at fault. On PlayStation, inspect the selected input device, microphone level, output device, mute state, and whether party chat or game chat is prioritized. The exact controls differ by console generation.

Choose party chat or in-game chat according to where your group is coordinating, then verify that the microphone and output route match that choice. PlayStation’s troubleshooting steps are specific to its consoles; other platforms use different menus.

When the problem may be on the game’s side

If your local diagnostics look normal and several players encounter the same matchmaking or convoy issue, check the game’s official service-status and support channels. Multiplayer problems can be service-side: in a December 2, 2021 update, Forza community manager Alan Walsh discussed then-reported Forza Horizon 5 matchmaking, connectivity, convoy, and player-disappearance problems. That is historical evidence that game-side incidents happen, not an indication of the game’s current status.

A practical order for troubleshooting

  1. Confirm access: check online eligibility, required account links, and any platform subscription required by your game.
  2. Read the game’s diagnostics: note ping, packet loss, and jitter separately if the game reports them.
  3. Test one connection change: if Wi-Fi seems unstable, try Ethernet if practical; otherwise check for broader network trouble and restart the console and network equipment where appropriate.
  4. Check group access: verify cross-play and account-linking settings if players on different platforms cannot join.
  5. Check audio routing: if only voice chat is affected, verify microphone, output, mute, and chat-priority settings.
  6. Look for a service incident: if multiple players share a matchmaking problem, consult the game’s current official status and support channels.

Change one setting at a time and observe whether the specific symptom changes. That makes it easier to distinguish a connection issue from cross-play restrictions, local audio routing, or a service-side problem.
