Epic Games Store is a strong place to check for limited-time giveaways and free-to-play games; GOG has a free-games category with a DRM-free focus; and itch.io is especially useful for indie and browser-playable projects. Amazon’s game offers are another possible route, while PC Game Pass is a paid subscription—not a source of games you keep for free.
How to choose a Steam alternative
Start with the kind of access you want. A free-to-play game can be downloaded without buying the base game. A giveaway is available to claim only for a limited window, though a successful claim may add it to your account for later access. A subscription lets you play games while your subscription is active and the titles remain in the catalog; it is not a permanent purchase.

- Willing to pay a recurring fee for temporary access? Consider PC Game Pass, keeping in mind that its catalog changes.
Epic Games Store: weekly giveaways and free-to-play games
Epic’s free-games page separates two useful options: a rotating giveaway and a “Top Free to Play” section. Epic says it gives away a free game every week, but the title and claim deadline change. Check the live page rather than relying on an older list of offers.
Giveaways: claim during the offer window
A giveaway is a time-limited opportunity to claim a game. Check the listed end date and any offer terms, then claim it through your Epic account before the offer expires. Do not assume that a game remains claimable after the page’s current promotion ends.

Free-to-play games: no purchase for the base game
The same page lists free-to-play games, including examples such as Fortnite, Rocket League, Genshin Impact, and Fall Guys. These are separate from weekly giveaways: they provide a continuing no-purchase way into the base game, rather than a temporary claim window. Individual games may still offer optional purchases.
GOG: browse the free-games category
GOG’s free-games category includes full games, DLC, and other free listings. Its storefront emphasizes DRM-free games, which may appeal if you prefer downloads that are not tied to the same kind of store-based DRM. The category is live, so check the individual listing for what is currently available.

DRM-free positioning does not mean every game has the same setup or works on every computer. Before downloading, look at the game’s page for supported operating systems, delivery details, and any title-specific instructions.
itch.io: independent and browser-playable games
itch.io’s free-games category is a useful place to discover small independent releases, game-jam entries, short games, and unusual projects. The site also surfaces browser-playable games, so some titles can be tried without a conventional download. Its listings include a mix of free downloads, browser games, demos, and paid projects; check the price and access details on each game’s page.

Because creators publish projects with varied formats and requirements, read the game description before downloading. Confirm operating-system support and follow the creator’s installation instructions, especially for experimental or less familiar projects.
Amazon game offers: check the current claim page
Amazon game offers can provide another way to claim PC games, but the redemption route may vary. An About Amazon guide describes Prime game offers delivered through services such as GOG, Epic Games Store, Legacy Games, or the Amazon Games app. Depending on the offer, claiming may involve linking accounts, redeeming a code, or installing an app.

PC Game Pass is an adjacent option if you are willing to pay a recurring subscription to play games from a catalog. It does not make those games permanent additions to your collection. Microsoft says subscribers can access library titles until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the library. Titles and availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform.

Check the current PC Game Pass page and the listing for a specific game before subscribing. If your priority is to keep a game without an ongoing subscription, focus instead on a giveaway you successfully claim or a free-to-play title.
