Green Rain is a special weather event added in Stardew Valley 1.6. It happens once each Summer on a randomly selected eligible date, covering the valley with weeds, moss, and unusual trees. It does not damage your farm; treat it as a resource-gathering day, especially for moss and weed drops.
When does Green Rain happen?
Green Rain occurs once each Summer, on one of these possible dates: Summer 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 18, or 23. The TV forecast describes an anomalous reading rather than naming the event outright. The green visual effect can appear indoors as well as outside. These are game-mechanic details documented by the Stardew Valley Wiki’s weather reference.
The official Stardew Valley 1.6 changelog confirms the addition of a new summer environmental event and moss as a resource.
What changes during Green Rain?
- Many weeds and special Green Rain Trees appear throughout the valley, except on the Beach and in the Calico Desert.
- Large event weeds yield 15 Foraging XP when destroyed, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s weather reference. Weeds may also drop moss.
- Moss appears on many mature trees. The weather reference lists a 50% chance for a mature tree to gain moss, and a 75% chance for mature oak and maple trees to temporarily become Green Rain Trees.
- Outdoor saplings may advance in growth during the event.
- In Year 1, most villagers stay indoors; Demetrius, Leah, and Linus are exceptions. Gifts cannot be given during Year 1 Green Rain.
Most spawned weeds disappear the next day, and most Green Rain Trees away from the farm return to their original form. Some trees can remain; Green Rain Trees in Pelican Town are removed. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s weather reference notes that these mechanics include later changes such as the Year 1 gift restriction added in version 1.6.4.

What should you do during Green Rain?
- Clear event weeds. Collect their drops and Foraging XP from large weeds. The amount of loot varies, so do not expect a fixed haul.
- Gather moss without felling trees. Moss can be collected with a tool, weapon, or bomb; the tree does not need to be chopped down. Large event weeds can drop two to three moss, while other event weeds have a chance to drop it, as described by the Stardew Valley Wiki’s moss reference.
- Check mature trees and decide which to keep. Many event changes are temporary, but some trees remain. If you want lasting Green Rain Trees on your farm, collect Mossy Seeds and plant them.
Moss has uses beyond the event, including crafting Speed-Gro and Mushroom Logs, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s moss reference.
Green Rain Tree types compared
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Green Rain Trees reference distinguishes three varieties. Their uses differ, so check the tree before chopping it.
Rank #2
| Tree type | Grows moss? | Fiddlehead fern use | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | Can grow moss | No specific fiddlehead yield listed | Can be grown from a planted Mossy Seed |
| Type 2 | Can grow moss | No specific fiddlehead yield listed | Can be grown from a planted Mossy Seed |
| Type 3 | Cannot grow moss | Chopping yields fiddlehead ferns; it can also be tapped for them outside Winter | Can be grown from a planted Mossy Seed |
Some trees spawned or transformed for the event are temporary, while trees grown from Mossy Seeds can persist. The tree reference also notes that some temporary trees can spread seeds.
Other effects and Year 1 details
At the end of the event, TV channels display green static. The Stardrop Saloon jukebox and Mini-Jukebox do not play, and the Telephone cannot be used. During Year 1, buildings can be entered regardless of their usual hours, and some bedrooms may be accessible without the normal heart requirements. These event-specific details are documented in the Stardew Valley Wiki’s weather reference.
