There is no single best PC settings preset for every survival horror game. Start with the specific game’s system requirements, match resolution and refresh rate to your display, then adjust demanding graphics options in small steps while checking stability during actual gameplay.
Start with the game and PC you actually have
A survival-horror label does not tell you what settings your computer can handle. Check the current minimum and recommended requirements for the exact game, then compare them with your PC’s CPU, GPU, graphics memory (VRAM), and system memory. Requirements and supported hardware can differ between games and may change with updates.
Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 (2023) troubleshooting guide warns that a PC below the game’s minimum requirements may have poor frame rates or fail to run. For a PC that meets minimum but not recommended specifications, Capcom advises lowering graphics settings. Its Resident Evil Village support guide also notes that some laptop and integrated graphics may work but are not tested or officially supported; a laptop GPU is not necessarily equivalent to a desktop GPU with a similar name.
Before changing settings, note the game version, CPU and GPU models, VRAM, system memory, operating-system and driver versions, display resolution, and monitor refresh rate. These details help you distinguish a settings problem from a hardware or compatibility issue—and make your results easier to compare when you test a change.

Set resolution and refresh rate for your display
Resolution and refresh rate are display settings, not universal recommendations for a genre. Choose values supported by both your monitor and the game. Capcom’s PC graphics settings FAQ identifies resolution and refresh rate as display controls and notes that how visible setting differences are depends on the user’s environment.
When choosing among supported options, consider what matters on your screen: image sharpness, smoothness, and responsiveness. A gaming monitor’s refresh rate is relevant only if the monitor, game, and PC can all use the selected setting. Without knowing those specifics, there is no sound basis for prescribing one resolution or refresh-rate number.

Build a baseline, then test changes in gameplay
- Start from defaults or a suitable preset. Use the game’s default configuration or a preset that fits your hardware as a baseline, rather than changing every option at once.
- Pick a repeatable gameplay area. Check a demanding section where the issue appears, not just a menu or quiet scene. Performance can vary across the game, so a single easy scene may not reveal the problem.
- Change one or a few settings at a time. If performance is unstable, lower graphics settings and repeat the same check. This makes it easier to see whether a change helped without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.
- Judge stability as well as image quality. Look for performance that remains acceptably consistent through play, and decide whether a visual improvement is worth any loss of smoothness or responsiveness for you. There is no cross-game frame-rate target established by the sources cited here.
- Restart if the game requires it. Capcom’s RE4 troubleshooting guide says most graphics changes require restarting the game to take effect. Check the specific game’s instructions before judging a setting that may not yet have applied.
Decide whether advanced lighting is worth the cost
Ray tracing and path tracing can add visual detail, but their performance cost depends on the game and hardware. In a PC Gamer analysis of Resident Evil Requiem published on February 27, 2026, Hardware Writer Nick Evanson reported 157 fps with High ray tracing and 77 fps with path tracing on the publication’s RTX 5090 test PC. Those results describe that game and test setup; they are not expected frame rates for another horror game or another GPU.
Treat these lighting options as choices to test, not settings every PC should enable or disable. Compare the image on your own display and check performance in the same gameplay area. If the visual difference is not worthwhile to you, or performance becomes unstable, lower or turn off the demanding option.

Separate display faults from graphics performance
Flickering or a blank screen is a different problem from an unstable frame rate. For Resident Evil 4, Capcom advises checking vertical synchronization (V-sync) and refresh-rate settings when troubleshooting display problems. Follow the relevant game’s support guidance, and test those display controls separately from image-quality options so you can identify which change affects the fault.
