To check whether a graphics card will fit and work in your PC, compare the exact card model’s dimensions with your case’s available clearance, then match the card’s power requirements and connectors to your power supply (PSU). Include space for airflow and power cables—not just the card itself. A GPU’s family name is not enough: dimensions and requirements can differ between cards built around the same GPU.
1. Find the exact card’s dimensions and power requirements
Look up the manufacturer’s specifications for the specific add-in card you plan to buy, including its brand, model and revision where available. Record its length, height, thickness or slot size, recommended system power, and required power connectors. NVIDIA cautions that “Graphics card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer” and advises buyers to consult the specifications for the particular add-in-card model (NVIDIA RTX 4090 product guidance).
Reference specifications can help you compare cards, but they do not establish the dimensions of every partner model. NVIDIA’s graphics card comparison page lists reference-card measurements and power information while noting that many partner-card dimensions vary by manufacturer.
2. Check physical clearance inside your case
Compare the card’s measurements with the case manufacturer’s GPU-clearance specification and the space available in your actual build. A published clearance is only useful if your configuration leaves that space open.

- Length: Check whether front fans, a radiator, or drive cages reduce the room available for the card.
- Height: Confirm the card fits between the motherboard expansion slots and the case side panel, including any protruding components or cables.
- Thickness: Check how many expansion slots the card occupies and whether it would block a neighboring card or connector.
- Cable space: Leave room to connect and route the GPU power cable without forcing a sharp bend against the side panel. Follow the card and cable makers’ instructions.
For scale, NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 Founders Edition is listed as 12 inches (304 mm) long, 5.4 inches (137 mm) wide and 3-slot, with 1.4 inches (36 mm) of additional space recommended for power cables. Its RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition is listed as 9.6 inches (244 mm) by 3.9 inches (98 mm), 2-slot, with the same 1.4-inch (36 mm) cable-space recommendation. These are specifications for those Founders Edition cards, not sizing rules for other models (RTX 4090 guidance; RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 guidance).
3. Make sure the PSU can power the specific card
Read the card maker’s recommended system power and compare it with the PSU’s rated wattage. Treat the recommendation as specific to that card and system: the rest of the PC’s configuration can affect the power supply needed, so a single wattage threshold cannot guarantee compatibility for every build.

For example, NVIDIA lists an 850 W minimum system power for the RTX 4090 Founders Edition and notes that a higher rating may be needed depending on the system configuration. That figure applies to this card guidance; it is not a universal requirement for graphics cards.
4. Match the GPU power connectors to the PSU’s actual cables
Check the exact card’s connector type and count, any included adapter, and the card maker’s instructions. Then inspect the PSU and confirm that it has the required compatible cables available. Do not assume that a PSU has the right connections simply because its wattage appears sufficient.

NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 Founders Edition guidance specifies either three PCIe 8-pin cables feeding its included adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 power cable rated for at least 450 W. Other cards can have different requirements; use the instructions for the exact model rather than applying this example to another GPU.

A card that physically fits can still leave too little room for ventilation or obstruct adjacent expansion slots. Check how the card’s thickness affects nearby components and whether fans have space to move air. NVIDIA says reserving clearance around a card equivalent to an unused expansion slot will typically improve airflow (RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 guidance).

Pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Identify the exact card model and revision, then note its length, height, thickness or slot size, power recommendation, and connector requirements.
- Check the case’s published GPU clearance against the open space in your build, accounting for front radiators, fans, and drive cages.
- Confirm the card will not collide with the side panel or block components and connections you need.
- Verify that the PSU’s rated wattage meets the card maker’s recommendation for your system.
- Check that the PSU has the compatible GPU power cables the card requires, including any specified adapter setup.
- Leave the cable-routing space called for by the card and cable makers, and consider the room needed for airflow.
