In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), earn Gold on a weapon, then complete that weapon’s Obsidian challenge; Platinum and Damascus are not prerequisites. Modern Warfare II (2022) has a different mastery-camo path—Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, then Orion—so the game year matters.
Modern Warfare (2019): Gold, Platinum, Damascus, and Obsidian
For an individual weapon, the direct Obsidian route is to unlock its camo challenges, complete all ten challenge sets to earn Gold, and then work on that weapon’s Obsidian requirement. Activision’s April 29, 2020 Obsidian guide explicitly says Gold is enough to pursue Obsidian: Platinum and Damascus are not required.
- Level the weapon. This unlocks its camo patterns and challenge tiers. The precise objectives vary by weapon; use that weapon’s in-game challenge panel for the wording that applies to it.
- Earn Gold. Complete all ten camo challenge sets for that weapon. Each set starts with a base pattern and has nine additional patterns earned through challenge tiers.
- Earn Obsidian, if desired. Once the weapon has Gold, complete its category-specific Obsidian requirement. Progress is for the weapon being worked on; it does not depend on unlocking Platinum or Damascus.
- Continue toward broader mastery camos separately. Gold across a weapon category unlocks Platinum for that category; Damascus involves further category-wide requirements. The official guide establishes this broader relationship but does not enumerate every current threshold, so check the in-game challenge and unlock displays rather than assuming a total.
Obsidian requirements by weapon type
Activision’s 2020 guide lists the following requirements. For requirements phrased as kills in a match, the specified match tally must be completed the listed number of times. Tallies can stack within a match: the guide gives the example that 30 AK-47 kills count as two 15-kill tallies.

The guide is dated, not a live readout of an individual account’s challenge. If your game displays a different requirement, follow the in-game challenge for that weapon.

Modern Warfare II (2022): a different mastery-camo sequence
MWII uses Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion. Its requirements should not be mixed with MW (2019)’s Obsidian rules. The official launch-period progression guide describes the sequence, while the later Call of Duty camo guide summarizes MWII challenges and explains their carry-forward into MWIII.
- Complete the weapon’s base camo challenges, then complete its Gold challenge. The later guide specifies three kills without dying ten times for Gold.
- For Platinum, complete the Gold challenge, meet the required Gold-camo count for that weapon type, and get 25 longshot kills with the weapon.
- For Polyatomic, complete that weapon’s Platinum challenge, reach 51 completed Platinum challenges overall, and get 25 headshot kills with the weapon.
- After completing 51 Polyatomic challenges, Orion is earned for weapons with Polyatomic.
The launch guide describes category Gold thresholds in relation to the number of weapons in each type at launch. These MWII gates—including the 51-challenge thresholds—are not MW (2019) requirements.

What carries from MWII into Modern Warfare III?
The official MWIII guide says MWII camo challenges carry forward into MWIII. The MWII completionist camos can be equipped only on the MWII weapon for which they were unlocked. MWIII’s own weapon mastery sets are separate, so carry-forward does not make the two games’ camo systems interchangeable.
