Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen your console runs short on space, first decide whether you need a game stored for later or playable directly from the added storage. On Nintendo Switch, a microSD card expands room for software but not saves. On PS5, a USB drive can hold PS5 games, but they must be moved back before you can play them; a compatible M.2 SSD can both store and run them. You can also archive or delete games you can download again.
The advice below covers the original Nintendo Switch family (Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED) and Sony’s PS5 guidance. Current Xbox storage steps and compatibility details could not be verified here, so check Microsoft’s current support information before buying or moving Xbox games.
Choose the kind of space you need
There are three practical ways to make room: remove software you can download again, move games you want to retain but do not need to play immediately, or add compatible storage. Those options are not interchangeable: some storage can hold a game without letting you play it from that drive.
- Need space now, and can download the game again later? Archive or delete it, after confirming you can access the account that owns it.
- Want to keep a larger installed library? Add storage that your console supports.
- Want to play from the added storage? Check the platform-specific rules below before choosing a drive.
Nintendo Switch: free software space without losing saves
On Switch, save data is stored in system memory, not on the microSD card or game card. Nintendo says the card can hold downloaded software data, including games, updates, and downloadable content. That means a microSD card can expand room for software, but it is not where Switch save data is kept. See Nintendo’s data management FAQ.

- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Archive a game to keep its icon
Archiving removes the downloaded software to free space while leaving its icon on the HOME Menu. Select the icon later to redownload the software. Nintendo says archiving leaves save data unaffected. Follow Nintendo’s software management instructions.
Delete a game to remove its icon too
Deleting also removes the software and frees space, but removes its HOME Menu icon. To download a purchased title again, use the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Save data remains unaffected by deleting the software.

Move eligible software data to a microSD card
On Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, open System Settings > Data Management > Move Data Between System / microSD Card. Nintendo notes that this moves eligible software data; it is not a setting for choosing where all future games install. Save data and some update data cannot be moved. Check Nintendo’s instructions for moving data before starting.
PS5: choose between USB storage and an M.2 SSD
Sony offers deletion and redownloading, USB extended storage, and compatible internal M.2 SSD storage. The key difference is whether you can play a PS5 game directly from the added drive.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
| Option | Can you play PS5 games from it? | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | No. Move a PS5 game back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing it. | You want to keep PS5 game data without using console storage. PS4 games can be played directly from the drive. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Yes. Sony says games can be stored and played from an M.2 expansion. | You want more space for games that remain playable from the added storage. |
Use USB extended storage for games you want to keep but not play now
Sony’s PS5 USB guidance says PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games stored there must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before play. The cited Sony guide specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB; check Sony’s current requirements before buying, since compatibility guidance can change. See Sony’s USB extended storage guide.
Choose a compatible M.2 SSD to play games from added storage
Sony says a compatible M.2 SSD expansion can be used to download, copy, store, manage, and play PS5 and PS4 games. Drives must meet Sony’s specifications, and installation is inside the console rather than a plug-in USB setup. Check the current M.2 SSD requirements and installation instructions before choosing a drive.

Delete a purchased game when you only need to reclaim space
Deleting a PS5 game or application does not remove access to a purchase: Sony says deleted items can be downloaded again from the game library. Sony’s storage guidance treats saved data separately from game installation data. PlayStation Plus members can use cloud storage for saved data, but a USB game-storage drive should not be treated as a backup for PS5 saves. See Sony’s PS5 storage-management guide.
