In a Windows Central interview, Lead Classic Designer Tim Jones described both reasons; Principal Designer Kris Zierhut connected the story to Shen’dralas and the history of Eldre’thalas, later known as Dire Maul. The developers did not provide a comprehensive explanation for rejecting High Elf or Blood Elf options.
Why did Blizzard choose Skyborne?
Jones said Blizzard knew players would enjoy having an elf character option, and that the team wanted to tell a story through the race. He put it this way: “We knew players were going to enjoy it. We have a really cool story to tell about it … so why not?” The explanation is a combination of player appeal and narrative opportunity, not a detailed account of every alternative the team considered.
Jones also recalled that before Blood Elves joined the Horde, faction balance was 60% Alliance and 40% Horde, then “actually flipped to 60% Horde” after their addition. That is Jones’s historical recollection in the interview, not an independently verified statistic: the report supplies no underlying data, measurement period, or methodology. His point was that adding an elf option can affect faction appeal.
What story does Skyborne let Blizzard explore?
Zierhut said Blizzard wanted to tell more stories about Shen’dralas and the history of Eldre’thalas, the ancient city later known as Dire Maul. He posed a specific question about that history: “Who opposed Prince Tortheldrin when he decided to sap his own people for power to summon demons?” The race therefore gives the designers a way to develop characters and conflicts associated with that setting.

Blizzard’s official guide describes two Skyborne lineages. Windshapers descend from shen’dorei high elves who received the wind spirits’ elemental skysight. The High Order descends from Highborne scholars of Eldre’Thalas. Those descriptions are specific to the game’s lore: “shen’dorei high elves,” “Highborne,” “High Elves,” and “Blood Elves” should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
How are Skyborne different from the High or Blood Elves players expected?
The clearest distinction in Blizzard’s explanation is the race’s narrative and gameplay framing. Skyborne are presented as a new race with two faction paths, elemental associations, and a connection to Shen’dralas and Eldre’thalas. The interview does not offer a direct, comprehensive comparison with High Elf or Blood Elf options, nor does it say why Blizzard ruled those concepts out.

That leaves an important boundary around the answer: Blizzard has explained what appealed to it about Skyborne, but the cited developer comments do not establish that the team rejected High or Blood Elves for any single stated reason. The official lore provides distinct Skyborne ancestry; it does not make the broader alternatives synonymous with that ancestry.
Which factions and classes can Skyborne choose?

Is “We may occasionally make a bold choice” a verified Blizzard quote?
That wording has not been verified in the cited interview or Blizzard pages. The attributable Jones quotation is the comment about players enjoying Skyborne and Blizzard having a story to tell. Without confirmation of the phrase’s speaker and context, it should not be presented as an exact Blizzard quote.

What is known about the controversy?
The topic has been described as controversial, and the Windows Central report noted criticism of adding “yet another” elf race as well as social-media mockery using “World of Elfcraft.” Those descriptions show that criticism exists; they do not establish how widespread it is. The available sources provide no representative poll or measured breakdown of player opinion.
When is WoW: Forever scheduled to launch?
Blizzard’s panel recap schedules World of Warcraft: Forever to launch globally on November 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. Pacific Time. As of October 7, 2026, that date is still in the future.
