Start by checking whether PlayStation services and your Wi-Fi work on other devices, then identify which problem you have: Portal will not join Wi-Fi, it cannot connect to its paired PS5, or the stream connects but stutters or drops. Cloud streaming is a separate feature with different eligibility and speed requirements.
First, identify the problem
Check the PlayStation Network service status and try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If that device also cannot get online, contact your internet service provider (ISP). If other devices work but Portal does not, focus on Portal, the router or access point, and the network connection.
- Portal will not join Wi-Fi: check the selected network, credentials, signal, and whether the problem occurs on another Wi-Fi network.
- Portal cannot connect to its paired PS5: check the console’s online status, account, Remote Play setting, and rest-mode options.
- The stream connects but performs poorly: check signal quality, competing network traffic, and the PS5’s connection to the router.
- A cloud-streaming launch or availability message appears: check cloud-streaming eligibility and regional availability separately from Remote Play.
Sony’s PS Portal troubleshooting guide recommends checking other devices and trying another Wi-Fi network before treating a network problem as a device fault.
If PlayStation Portal will not connect to Wi-Fi
Check the network and credentials
- Swipe left from the upper-right corner of the Portal screen to open the quick menu.
- Select Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Check that the intended Wi-Fi network is selected and that its password is correct.
- Move closer to the router or access point and try connecting again.
If Wi-Fi error 0x8320011A persists, Sony advises disconnecting some devices from the access point and trying another Wi-Fi network. A successful connection elsewhere suggests the problem is specific to the original network or its settings; if the issue follows Portal to another network, continue checking its settings and software before seeking support.

If Portal cannot connect to its paired PS5
Check Remote Play and account setup
- On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play for the relevant user.
- Confirm the PS5 is online, has current system software, and is signed in to the same PlayStation account as Portal.
- Test the connection with Portal near the PS5 before relying on Remote Play away from home.
Remote Play on Portal works with PS5, not PS4. If you are trying to connect to a PS4, this is a compatibility limitation rather than a network fault. Sony’s PS Portal Remote Play setup guide covers the console setup requirements.
Allow the PS5 to wake from Rest Mode
If you want Portal to turn on the PS5 over the network while it is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode on the console and enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Without these options, Remote Play may work while the console is on but fail to wake it from Rest Mode.
If Remote Play connects but the stream is unstable
Remote Play depends on the connection between Portal, the router, and PS5; a speed figure by itself cannot guarantee a smooth stream. Sony recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better Portal Remote Play experience, but signal quality, network traffic, and public Wi-Fi restrictions also matter.

- Connect PS5 to the router by Ethernet if possible. If the console uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting Portal and PS5 on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal where available. If band steering repeatedly moves Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Sony suggests disabling band steering if possible.
- Keep Portal and the router nearby with fewer walls and other obstacles between them.
- Pause downloads and other high-traffic activity on devices sharing the connection.
- On public Wi-Fi, account for network restrictions and congestion outside your control.
To inspect connection information on Portal, open the quick menu and select Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. Sony’s Remote Play setup guidance also recommends a stable high-speed Wi-Fi connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf cloud streaming will not launch or looks poor
Cloud streaming is not Remote Play: it streams supported games from Sony’s servers rather than from your own PS5. Requirements and availability vary by country. On its Canada support page, Sony says Portal cloud streaming requires an adult account and an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, and is available only in supported regions for supported games. Check the regional cloud-streaming guide for current eligibility in your country.
| Cloud-streaming use | Connection speed in Sony’s Canada guidance |
|---|---|
| Establish a streaming session | At least 5 Mbps |
| Stream at 720p | At least 7 Mbps |
| Stream at 1080p | At least 13 Mbps |
These figures are Sony’s Canada-specific minimums, not guarantees of performance in every region or on every network. If the connection is marginal, Sony allows you to lower the maximum resolution; the game’s actual resolution adjusts with connection quality. Make sure Portal software is up to date before troubleshooting a launch or availability error.

When to contact Sony or your ISP
If other devices also fail on the same network, contact the ISP. If Portal remains the only affected device after checking its network settings and testing another Wi-Fi network, or PS5 setup and software are correct but Remote Play still fails, contact PlayStation Support or use PlayStation Repairs.
Router or NAT settings are a later troubleshooting step, not the first fix. Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting page says Remote Play uses UDP port 8572 and that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play; this guidance is general Remote Play advice, not Portal-specific diagnosis. If you are unfamiliar with router settings, ask your ISP or router provider for help rather than changing ports at random. See Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting guidance.
