Before fitting a thumbstick extender, identify your exact controller and whether its stock sticks are concave or domed, then check the accessory maker’s compatibility guide. Installation depends on the attachment style: flexible grips and clip-on extenders do not use the same method. For removal, follow guidance for the specific product rather than prying or twisting by guesswork.
Check your controller and stick shape first
Compatibility is model-specific. KontrolFreek says its Performance Thumbsticks are primarily designed for standard PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One controllers, while its guide also lists additional fits and exceptions. Check the KontrolFreek compatibility guide for your exact controller and stock-stick shape before installing an accessory.
Xbox Elite and Elite Series 2 controllers illustrate why the stick shape matters: KontrolFreek says its Xbox Series X|S / One products generally fit both concave and domed stock sticks, except Low-rise products, which fit concave sticks but not domed ones. The guide lists narrower compatibility for some controllers—including cases where only No-Slip Thumb Grips are listed—and does not list compatible Performance Thumbsticks for some models. Do not infer fit from a different controller in the same brand family.
Know which kind of extender you have

The distinction matters: the flexible-grip method is not a universal method for clip-on extenders. The available instructions also do not establish that either style is universally safer.

How to fit a flexible No-Slip Thumb Grip
- Turn the flexible grip inside out, as directed in KontrolFreek’s No-Slip Thumb Grip instructions.
- Position it over the analog stick, then roll or turn it right-side out so it secures around the stick.
- Check underneath the stick to confirm the grip is seated around its corners. KontrolFreek’s instruction is to “Look underneath the joystick to ensure that the entire Thumb Grip is secured around the corners of the thumbstick.”
These steps apply to the flexible No-Slip Thumb Grip style described by KontrolFreek, not to clip-on Performance Thumbsticks or other accessories.
How to fit a clip-on extender without guessing
For a clip-on Performance Thumbstick, first verify the exact controller and stock-stick shape in the product maker’s compatibility information. Then use the instructions for that specific product. The official sources reviewed here do not provide a general fitting sequence for clip-on extenders, so do not treat the flexible-grip steps above as a substitute or improvise a procedure that could stress the stick.

KontrolFreek’s Inferno Edition listing says it “Snaps securely onto analog stick without damage.” That is KontrolFreek’s claim about that listed product, not a guarantee for every extender, controller, or stick condition. See the Inferno Edition product listing for the product-specific details.
How to remove an extender without risking the stick
The reviewed official sources do not give a general removal method for clip-on Performance Thumbsticks. They also do not establish a universal removal procedure for flexible grips. Use the instructions or support for the precise accessory and controller rather than assuming that prying, twisting, or using a tool is safe. If the maker does not publish removal steps, ask its support team before forcing an attachment.

Check the controller maker’s advice
Third-party compatibility claims do not override a controller maker’s own guidance. SCUF says it does not recommend third-party accessories with its thumbsticks because it cannot guarantee compatibility or that they will not damage SCUF thumbsticks. This warning is specific to SCUF products; it should not be generalized to every controller brand.
