You can play at home or away, provided both the PS5 and Portal have suitable internet connections. Portal streams games from a PS5; it is not a standalone console and does not work with PS4.
What you need before you start
- A PS5 with internet access and current system software.
- A PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and Portal. Use the same account on both.
- A Wi-Fi connection for Portal and a reliable internet connection for the PS5.
- For remote startup when the PS5 is in rest mode, two additional PS5 power settings enabled.
PlayStation specifies broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps for use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are connection thresholds, not a guarantee of smooth play: network stability and conditions also affect quality. See PlayStation’s Portal product page for its stated requirements.

How to set up Remote Play on PS5
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and install its latest system software. Check PlayStation’s PS5 system software update page for the current version; the listed version can change.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account you plan to use on Portal.
- On the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. Enable it for the user who will use Remote Play.
- If you want Portal to wake the PS5 from rest mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
How to connect Portal to your PS5
- Connect Portal to Wi-Fi and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on your PS5.
- From Portal’s Remote Play home screen, tap the Portal or press the cross button to connect to the PS5 used previously.
- For a first connection, or before trying to play away from home, check that Portal can connect while you are near the PS5. PlayStation notes that a device that has not connected for some time may not find the console.
For step-by-step device guidance, see PlayStation’s PlayStation Portal support page.
Can you use PlayStation Portal away from home?
Yes. Portal can connect to your PS5 over the internet when you are away, but the connection depends on the network available to Portal and the PS5’s internet access. Set up Portal and confirm it connects at home first, then try a reliable broadband Wi-Fi network elsewhere.

Why won’t Portal connect to the PS5?
Check the basic account, console, and network requirements before changing equipment. Work through these checks:
- Confirm Enable Remote Play is on for the intended PS5 user.
- Make sure Portal and PS5 are signed in to the same PlayStation account and that the PS5 has internet access.
- If the PS5 is in rest mode, verify both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Use the PS5’s internet connection test or test the network with another device. Check Portal’s network status and follow the quick menu’s troubleshooting tips.
- If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, try connecting it to the router with Ethernet. If that is not practical, move the PS5 and Portal nearer the router and reduce obstacles between them and the router.
- Update Portal system software before continuing with device-specific troubleshooting.
A wired PS5 connection can help identify or reduce wireless instability on the console side, but Portal itself still needs Wi-Fi.

Compatibility and optional audio
Portal connects to a PS5, not a PS4. PS5 media apps on the Media tab are not supported through Remote Play. For audio, you can use a wired headset or earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug, or compatible PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. These are optional; they are not required to set up Remote Play. See PlayStation’s compatibility and device guidance.
Remote Play and Cloud Streaming are different
Remote Play streams from your own PS5. Cloud Streaming is a separate Portal feature, and PlayStation says it requires PlayStation Plus Premium. That subscription is not required for the Remote Play setup described here. Cloud Streaming eligibility and game catalogs may vary by region and change over time.
