A menu’s listed price is only a starting point: taxes, mandatory charges, delivery or pickup costs, and differences in what a dish includes can change the comparison.
Match the meal and ordering method first
Start with the exact item and the way you plan to order it. A dine-in price, pickup price, and delivery price may not describe the same offer, even when the dish has the same name.
- Match the size, quantity, and any add-ons or substitutions.
- Check which sides, sauces, or other items are included rather than priced separately.
- Compare the restaurant’s own menu with the listing or checkout flow for the channel you intend to use. Prices and details may differ, and a listing may not be current.
If you are deciding between ordering channels, treat each channel as a separate basket and compare its final total.
Compare the total you would pay
Build the same basket in each menu or checkout flow. Include taxes and any unavoidable or clearly applicable surcharge, platform charge, delivery fee, or pickup cost. Review the total before payment; do not assume that a fee shown late in checkout was included in the menu price.

Local rules affect how prices and charges must be disclosed. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority’s summary, updated 7 January 2026, says prices should be clear, complete, and accurate so consumers can compare offers; it describes hidden fees or taxes added later as “drip pricing.” This is UK-focused guidance, not a worldwide legal rule: CMA guidance on clear and accurate price information.
In Australia, the Competition and Consumer Commission says customers should be told about restaurant and cafe weekend or public-holiday surcharges before deciding to order, and that unavoidable or preselected extras should be included in a displayed total price: ACCC price-display guidance. Check the applicable local rules and the restaurant’s disclosures; these examples do not establish requirements everywhere.

Check whether the channel changes the item price
Do not assume a delivery platform uses the same food prices as the restaurant’s own menu. Compare the same item and options across both, then add the charges for the channel you would use. In an April 2026 notice, the US Federal Trade Commission sought public comment on whether food-delivery services clearly disclose total prices and fees, and whether platform food prices differ from prices at the same restaurant. The notice is a request for comment about possible protections, not a final rule: FTC notice on online food and grocery delivery fees.
Compare portions and included items cautiously
A lower listed price does not automatically mean better value. Compare portion size or price per quantity only when the menus provide genuinely comparable information. For example, if both menus state the same measurable quantity, a per-unit calculation can help; if they only describe dishes differently, there is no reliable basis for inventing serving weights or a precise value score.

Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs explains how unit pricing can help compare goods sold in different quantities. Its guidance concerns food retail, not restaurant portions, so apply the idea only when restaurant menus provide comparable quantities: Canadian guidance on per-unit food pricing.

When two options differ, assess them on distinct axes instead of collapsing them into a score that implies more certainty than the menu supports:

Tip is an optional choice where applicable, not a substitute for identifying mandatory charges. Tipping rules and expectations vary by place and service. The FTC’s April 2026 notice quotes Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige on online grocery fees: “Online grocery fees that are unclear, inconsistently disclosed, or revealed only at the last moment before consumers make a purchase distort competition and harm consumers.” That statement concerns online grocery fees; it is not a finding specifically about restaurant menu prices.
