For smoother PlayStation Portal Remote Play, connect the Portal to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network and, if possible, connect your PS5 to the router with Ethernet. If the PS5 also uses Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting both devices on the same network. Aim for at least 15 Mbps in both upload and download, then reduce competing traffic and improve the wireless signal if play still stutters. These settings can help, but they cannot guarantee smooth play on every home network.

Recommended Wi-Fi setup for PlayStation Portal

  1. Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony recommends using a 5 GHz connection for the Portal. The best result still depends on signal strength, obstacles, congestion, and the router; 5 GHz is not guaranteed to outperform 2.4 GHz in every home. Sony’s PS Portal setup guidance explains the recommendation.
  2. Use Ethernet for the PS5 when practical. A wired console connection removes the PS5’s reliance on Wi-Fi. If the PS5 must be wireless, Sony recommends connecting it and the Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. Sony’s setup guidance and Portal troubleshooting steps cover these options.
  3. Turn off band steering for the Portal if your router allows it. Band steering automatically moves devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Sony recommends disabling it when connecting the Portal if possible. Router controls and labels vary, so consult your router’s documentation rather than relying on a universal menu path. Sony’s setup guidance describes the feature.
  4. Check both upload and download speeds. Sony identifies 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum for Remote Play, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. Its Portal setup and troubleshooting guidance also recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. That target is a recommendation, not a promise that play will be smooth. See Sony’s general Remote Play connection troubleshooting.

Do not treat a particular Wi-Fi channel, channel width, DNS server, or QoS rule as a universal fix: Sony’s cited support guidance does not establish one best value for those settings. Start with the connection changes above and the troubleshooting steps below.

Reduce lag and instability

  • Pause large downloads on other devices while playing; network activity can compete with Remote Play for bandwidth. Sony recommends checking for other downloads when troubleshooting. Portal troubleshooting
  • Move the Portal and, if it is wireless, the PS5 closer to the router. Reduce obstacles between wireless devices and the access point. Sony’s placement guidance
  • Check whether Wi-Fi works normally on another device before assuming the Portal is the cause. If the connection remains unreliable, test another network if one is available. Sony’s Wi-Fi error steps
  • Use Ethernet for the PS5 if you can; if not, test the same Wi-Fi network for both devices, as Sony recommends.

Check the Portal’s network status

While playing, open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status to inspect the connection, if the option is available in the installed Portal software. Sony lists this tool in its PS Portal system software information.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The Portal will not connect to Wi-Fi

  1. Check whether other devices can connect to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. On the Portal, open Settings > Network and review the internet connection setup.
  3. If the problem persists, try another network to help determine whether the issue is specific to the home connection. Sony outlines these checks in its Wi-Fi error guidance.

The Portal connects, but play stutters or feels unstable

  1. Pause downloads and other heavy network activity.
  2. Check upload and download speeds against Sony’s recommended 15 Mbps in each direction.
  3. Test 5 GHz, improve device placement, and wire the PS5 if possible.
  4. Check the Portal’s network status while playing, if that tool is available.

The Portal cannot reach the paired PS5

  • Confirm Remote Play is enabled on the PS5, both devices use the same PlayStation account, and the PS5 is online.
  • To connect to a PS5 in rest mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network in the PS5’s rest-mode settings. Sony’s Portal setup guidance covers the connection requirements.
  • Sony’s general Remote Play troubleshooting identifies UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. This is not an instruction to change router settings blindly. If you suspect a network restriction, ask your ISP or router support for help. Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting

Using the Portal on public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi quality and access rules are outside your control, and Portal support for public networks has changed through software updates. Some public 5 GHz networks may not be supported in all regions. Check the Portal’s installed software and the network’s access requirements; Sony lists feature changes on its system software information page.

When a router change or purchase may help

First try the settings and placement changes above; extra equipment is not a prerequisite. If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi and you want to try Sony’s wired-console recommendation, a suitable Ethernet cable is one possible implementation. If considering a router or access point, look for coverage where you play, a usable Ethernet port and cable route for the PS5, and the ability to control band steering. Sony does not name a universally best router or provide one menu path that applies to every model.
