A video can help screen a listing, but it cannot replace a live test of the unit you are buying.
Before arranging a meeting
- Ask for a recent video of the exact console powering on, displaying a stable picture, connecting to the internet, and demonstrating its ports and buttons. If a disc drive is included, ask to see it tested. Sony recommends this kind of video check in its PlayStation buying guide.
- Request clear photos of the model label and serial number, HDMI port, controller, cables, and any included disc-drive attachment. Ask for the box or proof of purchase if available. Sony flags removed serial numbers and broken warranty seals as concerns.
- Agree on exactly what is included. The PS5 Pro has a disc-drive port but no integrated disc drive; the drive is optional. If you need physical games or movie discs, confirm the drive is part of the bundle rather than assuming it is.
- Ask why the seller is selling and whether the console has been repaired, opened, or had problems. A vague answer is a reason to require a more thorough live test, not proof on its own that the console is faulty.
- Review the seller’s history and feedback, as Sony advises. Set up a meeting where you can connect the console to a display and the internet before handing over payment.
What to inspect at the handover

Match the console to the listing
Check that the model matches the listing and that the serial-number label is present and appears intact. Do not proceed if the serial has been removed or visibly altered. Sony identifies removed serials as a warning; its US and Canada warranty terms also exclude units with an altered, defaced, or removed serial number. That regional warranty rule is not a statement of warranty coverage elsewhere.

Inspect the exterior and connectors
Look for cracks, impact marks, liquid residue, unusually heavy dust, damaged connectors, loose panels, or signs the console has been opened. Sony recommends checking for damage and broken seals. An exterior inspection cannot establish the condition of internal components.

Power on and check the picture
Connect the PS5 Pro to a display with HDMI. Confirm that it starts normally, produces a stable image, and responds to menu navigation. Look at the HDMI port for visible damage as well as checking that the connection works.

Test controls, ports, and internet access
Pair and use the controller, try the available USB connections, and test wired or wireless internet where practical. Confirm that the console reaches PlayStation services on the actual unit. Sony says a console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services, and recommends checking service access on connected products. A successful connection is useful evidence of current access, not a guarantee about future status.

Observe it under use
Leave the console running long enough to navigate menus or start a game. Watch for unexpected shutdowns, overheating warnings, or other visible faults, and listen for unusual noise. Sony specifically advises checking for overheating. A brief handover test cannot prove long-term reliability.

Test an included disc drive
If the seller includes the optional drive, insert a known-good disc and verify that the console reads it. Sony lists support for PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray games and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. Pairing the drive to the console during setup requires an internet connection. Complete the account handover
Ask the seller to deactivate the console and confirm they no longer need access to it. Before signing in with your own account, reset the console to remove the seller’s data. Sony’s buying guide recommends seller deactivation; its transfer and disposal guidance explains resetting a console before it changes hands.

How to judge the deal and its protection
Compare individual used listings on tested function, physical condition, an intact serial number, included controller and cables, whether a disc drive is included, proof of purchase, seller deactivation, service access, and available return terms. If comparing a private sale with a certified-refurbished or authorized-retailer option, weigh the price against the specific warranty, return policy, and included accessories. Verify the terms of the particular listing; Sony’s cited certified-refurbished US listing is for a PS5 console, not a PS5 Pro.
Sony cautions that third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty. Its US/Canada PS5 warranty page describes one year of coverage for the original purchaser, subject to exclusions; it does not establish that a used buyer elsewhere receives transferable coverage. Check the warranty terms for your region and the specific console rather than assuming coverage carries over. Current prices, stock, and regional terms vary; verify them at the time you buy.
When to walk away or seek clarification
- The serial label is missing or appears altered.
- The seller will not let you test the console in person or connect it to the internet and PlayStation services.
- The HDMI output, controller, ports, or an included disc drive fails a basic test.
- You see damage, overheating warnings, unexpected shutdowns, or other faults that the seller cannot satisfactorily explain.
- The included accessories or the console’s account and service status do not match what was promised.
Sony does not identify a public checker that guarantees a used console has no prior ownership or service issues. If a status question remains after testing, contact PlayStation Support before completing the purchase.
