To tell whether an Amazon deal is genuinely a good buy, compare the exact same item at other stores, calculate what you will pay at checkout, and check the Amazon listing’s price history, seller, delivery, and return terms. A discount badge or crossed-out price is context—not proof that the offer is the best available.
1. Confirm that every listing is the same item
Start with the manufacturer and model number, then check the variant: size, color, quantity, condition, and included accessories. Similar-looking products may differ, and retailers sometimes sell exclusive versions. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers to note a product’s manufacturer or model number and details such as size, color, and shipping fees when comparison shopping (FTC online shopping guidance).
For a video game, for example, verify the platform and edition, whether the listing is for a physical disc or a digital code, and whether any included content or accessories match. Do not treat a different edition, bundle, or condition as a direct price comparison.
2. Compare the checkout total, not just the headline price
Record the item price and every condition or cost needed to get it: coupon, membership, minimum purchase, shipping, handling, delivery, and applicable taxes where shown. A low displayed price may depend on a coupon or eligibility requirement; compare it with the amount you can actually pay under the same conditions.

The FTC recommends learning the total cost and reading deal terms before buying. Its advice also cautions shoppers to assess comparison sites carefully: results can be sponsored, incomplete, or out of date. Use them to find possible alternatives, then verify the price and item on the retailer’s own listing.
3. Put the Amazon price in context
Check the listing’s price history
Amazon says eligible product pages in the US, UK, and India show price-history views for 30, 90, and 365 days. If the feature appears on the listing, use the longer view to judge whether the current offer is near a recent low or whether similar prices have appeared before. Availability is not guaranteed for every listing, so check the product page itself (Amazon’s price-history announcement).
Amazon reported in 2026 that more than 50 million customers had used the feature. That is Amazon’s own usage figure, not an independently audited measure or proof that every price record captures every seller’s offer.

Treat reference prices as a clue, not a verdict
A “was” price, list price, or strikethrough amount does not by itself establish that today’s price is unusually good. FTC guidance says a former price used for comparison should be a bona fide price at which the item was regularly offered to the public for a reasonably substantial period. The federal rule states: “If the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the article was offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time, it provides a legitimate basis for the advertising of a price comparison” (16 CFR § 233.1(a)). This is US federal guidance; rules elsewhere may differ. For your purchase decision, compare the current amount with the price history and live offers for the identical item.
4. Check the seller, fulfillment, and purchase terms
On Amazon, note whether the offer is sold by Amazon or by a third-party selling partner, and who fulfills it. Compare stock status, condition, delivery promise, shipping charges, return terms, and any warranty information stated on the listing. Amazon says selling partners independently set prices, shipping fees, delivery promises, and return policies; its cited explanation concerns Amazon Europe and should not be assumed to describe every marketplace (Amazon Europe selling-partner policy information).

A lower price may not be the better offer if the delivery date, return window, or seller terms do not suit you. Read the current listing and applicable policy rather than assuming marketplace offers share identical terms.
5. Check whether the other retailer will match Amazon
Price matching depends on the retailer, purchase channel, exact product, seller, and current exclusions. In the US, Target’s policy allows qualifying matches for certain identical items sold and fulfilled by Amazon or Walmart; eligibility conditions apply, so check its current terms before relying on a match (Target price-match policy). Walmart says it does not match competitor prices for purchases on Walmart.com; rules for a store purchase may differ. Confirm the policy for the channel you plan to use (Walmart price-match policy).
