What to Check Before Buying an OLED Gaming Monitor on Sale

A practical checklist for deciding whether an OLED gaming monitor’s specs, warranty, and sale price fit your setup.

Before you buy an OLED gaming monitor on sale, check that its resolution and refresh rate suit your system, verify the exact HDR certification and ports, and read the protection, warranty, and return terms for the specific model and region. Then compare the final checkout price—not just the advertised discount.

Does OLED or IPS suit your gaming and everyday use?

There is no universal winner. LG’s buying guide associates OLED with deep blacks and fast response for immersive gaming, while IPS may suit a mix of competitive gaming and daily desktop use. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent head-to-head test; weigh it against your games, viewing habits, and how much time the display will show static desktop content. LG’s monitor buying guide outlines the trade-offs.

Will the resolution and refresh rate work with your setup?

Match screen size and resolution to your desk and GPU

Higher resolution can show more detail, but it also asks more of the graphics card. Consider viewing distance, screen size, and whether you value visual detail or high frame rates more. LG’s guide says screens of 27 inches or larger can pair well with QHD, 4K, or higher resolutions; it also cautions that 4K may be poor value with a mid-range or older GPU, or for competitive shooters where frame rate matters more.

Check refresh rate at the resolution you intend to use

A high refresh rate can make motion look smoother, especially in competitive games, but the PC or console must be able to deliver enough frames to use it. Compare the native resolution and maximum refresh rate, and read any dual-mode specifications carefully: the highest advertised refresh rate may only be available at a lower resolution. LG’s UK product page for the 27GX790A-B, for example, lists 480Hz and ClearMR 21000 certification. Those are published specifications for that model, not independent test results or a guarantee about performance in a particular game.

What does the HDR label actually certify?

Look for the exact VESA DisplayHDR or DisplayHDR True Black tier, and verify the model in VESA’s certified-products listing. VESA’s criteria cover luminance, color gamut, contrast or black level, and color error. Its published summary lists minimum peak luminance of 400 cd/m² and 90% DCI-P3 coverage for DisplayHDR 400; DisplayHDR True Black 400 specifies 400 cd/m² and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. These are certification requirements, not measurements of a specific unit’s real-world performance. VESA advises shoppers to look for tested and certified products; generic “HDR-400” wording is not equivalent to the formal “DisplayHDR 400” tier. Read VESA’s DisplayHDR overview and do not judge HDR quality from a label alone.

Do the ports and adaptive sync fit your PC or console?

Check the exact SKU’s HDMI and DisplayPort versions, bandwidth, and any USB-C features you need. Then confirm that the monitor supports the adaptive-sync implementation used by your graphics card or console, rather than relying on a broad compatibility claim. LG’s buying guide flags connectivity and FreeSync/G-SYNC compatibility as relevant checks; model and region specifications can differ. LG lists VESA AdaptiveSync certification on the 27GX790A-B page, but confirm the ports and capabilities for the product you are actually considering.

What should you know about OLED care and warranty?

ASUS says image persistence or burn-in can occur if a static, high-contrast image remains on screen for a prolonged period. Consider how much static desktop use the monitor will get, and check its pixel-cleaning and other screen-protection settings. Those features do not establish warranty coverage: read the warranty terms for the exact model, SKU, and country before buying. ASUS explains its OLED care guidance and warranty terms on its OLED monitor support page and warranty information page.

How do you tell whether the sale is worth it?

Promotions are time-limited and can vary by seller and region. An LG US promotion page displayed “VALID THROUGH 10/4/26”; that offer expired on October 4, 2026, and is not a current deal.
