For a good starting setup, select the highest refresh rate your monitor supports at its current resolution and connection, enable a compatible variable refresh rate (VRR) mode for gaming, and adjust brightness to suit the room and the monitor’s SDR or HDR mode. Keep the display’s OLED protection features enabled and follow its own maintenance prompts. Exact limits and menu names vary by model, so check your monitor’s manual.
Set the monitor’s supported refresh rate
Choose the refresh rate in your computer’s display settings, not necessarily in the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD). First confirm the maximum supported for your monitor at the resolution and port or connection you use. Dell directs Windows users to Windows Display Settings to change the rate.
Supported limits can differ substantially even among gaming OLEDs. LG lists 240Hz for its 27GX704A-B and 480Hz for its 27GX790A-B. These are model specifications, not a universal OLED limit. The available mode can also depend on resolution and connection, so use the specifications and manual for your exact display.
A high refresh rate gives the monitor the capacity to show more frequent updates, but the computer must output the selected mode and the game must produce frames to use it. The refresh-rate setting alone does not guarantee a particular performance improvement.

Enable VRR when your setup supports it
For gaming, enable the monitor’s supported adaptive-sync feature and the corresponding setting on your PC, GPU, or console, if available. Depending on the display and system, the relevant name may be AdaptiveSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, or AMD FreeSync. LG describes its listed sync technologies as reducing tearing or stuttering, but compatibility depends on the specific monitor, graphics hardware, connection, and settings.
Check the monitor manual and your system’s display or graphics settings for the supported combination and exact menu labels. A feature listed for one monitor does not establish that every GPU, console, port, or cable combination will support it.

Adjust brightness for SDR, HDR, and your room
There is no single evidence-backed brightness value that suits every OLED gaming monitor. Separate SDR desktop use from HDR games: the available controls and brightness behavior can change by mode, and peak brightness is not the same as sustained full-screen brightness.
Set a comfortable image for your room using the controls documented for your monitor. Do not assume that brightness at 100, or any other fixed value, is the best setting. Panel technology and generation also matter; ASUS notes that QD-OLED generations can differ in peak and full-screen brightness, efficiency, durability, reflections, and pixel layout.

Example: LG’s model-specific bright-image options
LG’s 27GX704A-B specifications list 275 nits standard luminosity and 1300 nits peak brightness. Its product guidance describes options such as turning off Smart Energy Saving, selecting Gamer 1, raising brightness, and setting Peak Brightness to High. LG also warns that these choices can increase power use and potential burn-in risk. Those figures and menu choices apply to that model’s documentation; they are not a general prescription for OLED monitors.

Leave available screen-movement or pixel-shift features, screen savers or logo dimming, and pixel or image cleaning enabled. ASUS explains that prolonged static, high-contrast images can cause image persistence or burn-in, and that pixel shifting moves the image slightly. LG cautions that its protection functions may not prevent every occurrence. These features reduce risk; they are not a guarantee against burn-in.

Use the maintenance behavior specified by your manufacturer. For example, Dell describes Pixel Refresh on applicable gaming and Alienware models as an automatic process that can run after at least four hours of use and take six to eight minutes. Its separate Panel Refresh is associated with about 1,500 accumulated hours and takes approximately one hour. These are Dell-specific timings and thresholds, not a schedule to apply to other brands. Follow your monitor’s prompts and manual rather than manually starting another brand’s process or overriding its guidance.
Quick Recap
Quick setup checklist
