There is no format that is always cheapest for PS5 games. Compare the same game and edition at the prices available to you, then factor in delivery, disc-drive compatibility, subscription terms, and whether you want a copy to keep or temporary catalog access.
Check your PS5 before comparing prices
A PS5 game disc requires a PS5 with an installed disc drive. PlayStation describes the Digital Edition as having no disc drive, though a separately sold drive can be added to supported configurations. Check your exact console model and the cost and compatibility of a drive before treating disc prices as a potential saving. See PlayStation’s PS5 console information and disc drive details.

Compare the same game and edition
For a useful comparison, match the title and edition, and include delivery or other checkout costs for a physical copy. Prices and stock vary by country and change over time, so the cheapest option depends on what is actually available to you. Check the account region, edition, and any sale end date for a digital offer; for a disc, check condition and return terms.
There is no verified universal cheapest format, and no current matched price comparison for a particular title or retailer here. Compare the prices you can buy today rather than assuming discs or downloads always win.

Buy a physical PS5 game disc
A disc may suit you if you want a physical copy or find a lower local price. Confirm that your console has a disc drive, and compare the exact edition, condition, delivery, and return terms with the digital listing.
Buy digitally from PlayStation Store
A digital purchase is downloaded through PlayStation Store. Look for sales and compare the final price for the same edition against physical copies available in your area. PlayStation Plus members may also receive exclusive Store discounts, sometimes on top of existing reductions; check the price shown for your account and region. PlayStation Plus benefits.

Use PlayStation Plus Essential for member benefits
Essential may be worthwhile if you value its monthly games and member discounts. Treat it as a recurring subscription cost: compare the plan’s current price and renewal terms with the benefits you expect to use, rather than counting a discount as a saving if the membership would otherwise be unnecessary.
Use Extra or Premium for catalog access
Extra includes access to the Game Catalog. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Catalog games are subscription access, not permanent purchases: games can leave, and access to Plus games lasts only while membership remains active. Check the current catalog and terms before subscribing for one specific game. PlayStation Plus plan features and membership terms and benefits.

Share eligible games on one household PS5
Console Sharing and Offline Play can allow other users on one enabled PS5 to play games downloaded by the account holder and receive selected PlayStation Plus benefits. Sharing is limited to one PS5, and some benefits cannot be shared. It is not a way to share access with a friend using a different PS5. Review PlayStation’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guidance before relying on it.
Make the decision on total cost and access
- Compare the same title and edition, including checkout costs.
- Count a disc option only if your PS5 has a compatible installed drive, and include a separately sold drive in the cost if needed.
- For Plus, include the subscription renewal cost and decide whether its other benefits matter to you.
- Distinguish a digital purchase from a subscription catalog game that can leave the service.
- For a shared household, confirm the one-console sharing setup and which benefits are eligible.
Prices, catalog membership, stock, and hardware availability are time- and region-dependent. Recheck the listing and terms before buying or subscribing.

What the announced disc-production change means
On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, announced that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. This is an announced future production policy, not a measurement of how many players prefer digital games. The announcement does not by itself establish current availability or prices for any particular game. PlayStation.Blog announcement.
