A PS5 disc game can be installed and played offline if your console has a disc drive and the game supports offline play. The disc provides the game data, but it does not guarantee that every game, mode, or first launch will work without an internet connection.
What you need to play a PS5 disc game offline
- A PS5 with a disc drive: Sony says disc-based games can be played only on a console with a disc drive installed. Check your console’s configuration if you are unsure whether it has one. Sony’s PS5 support page and the PS5 Quick Start Guide, CFI-71XX cover disc use.
- The game disc: Insert it and let the game install before you disconnect. Sony’s instructions describe installing from the disc and launching the installed game from the games home screen.
- A game that allows offline play: Requirements vary by title. Some features or games may require an internet connection, an account sign-in, or an online check.
How to prepare and play offline
- Insert the disc into the PS5 disc drive.
- Wait for the game to install, then select it from the games home screen. Keep the disc available: Sony’s disc-play instructions start with inserting the disc to launch the installed game. See the Quick Start Guide and PS5 support.
- Before going offline, check the game’s product page or publisher support for online-only modes, required sign-in, and other connection requirements. General PlayStation guidance does not confirm the offline behavior of every individual game.
Disc games and digital games have different access rules
A disc game depends on having the disc drive and disc available. Downloaded or shared digital games have separate account and license requirements. Sony says users can play games and media offline when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Find the setting at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony says it is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in and can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. Read Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guide.
If the game will not start
First identify whether the problem is with the disc or with a digital entitlement. For a disc version, follow Sony’s game-start troubleshooting guidance and check the disc. For a locked digital game, Sony recommends checking account ownership, subscription status where applicable, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and licenses. Those digital license checks are separate from the basic requirement to insert a disc for a disc game.
What offline play does not guarantee
Being able to install and launch a disc game offline does not mean its multiplayer, online services, or every feature will be available. Nor does the general offline-play guidance establish whether a particular game needs internet for its first launch. Confirm the requirements for the exact title before disconnecting, especially if you have not yet started it.
