Choose an installation route
CD PROJEKT RED documents three ways to install community mods: subscribe through mod.io in the game, subscribe through Steam Workshop, or download files from Nexus Mods and place them as the mod author directs. These routes do not necessarily offer the same mods, and their availability does not certify a mod as safe or compatible. The official guide says: “The content of mods for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is created by the community and not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED.” See the official Witcher 3 REDkit user guide for its route instructions.

Install a mod through the in-game mod.io menu
- Launch The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and choose Mods from the main menu.
- Log in with your CD PROJEKT RED account and connect it to mod.io when prompted.
- Browse the available mods and select Subscribe on the one you want.
- Wait for the download to finish, then restart the game.
- Open Installed and confirm that the mod is checked or enabled.
If the mod does not appear enabled after the restart, check its entry in Installed before troubleshooting files or adding another mod.
Install a mod through Steam Workshop
- Browse the available The Witcher 3 mods in Steam Workshop.
- Subscribe to the mod you want.
- Launch the game and check that the mod is available and active.
This is a subscription-based route for mods available through Workshop. The official instructions do not establish that every mod on another platform is also available there.

Install a Nexus Mods download
- Browse the Witcher 3 category on Nexus Mods and choose a mod.
- Read the mod’s installation instructions, requirements, and compatibility notes before downloading.
- Download the files and place them in the game folder specified by that mod’s instructions.
- Launch the game and verify the mod works before installing more.
There is no single folder path that applies to every Nexus download: packages and installation steps can differ. Follow the author’s directions rather than assuming a familiar folder layout applies.
Configure mods without making troubleshooting harder
There is no universal load order or conflict-resolution recipe in the official instructions. Mod combinations can depend on their requirements and the game build you have, so treat each mod’s compatibility notes as part of installation—not as optional extras.

- Check your actual setup: note the game version and storefront you use, then compare them with the mod’s stated requirements.
- Use one installation route consistently for each mod: keep track of whether you subscribed through a platform or installed files manually. Do not assume one route manages files installed through another.
- Add a small number at a time: launch the game and check the result before making more changes. This makes it easier to identify which addition caused a problem.
- Keep a recoverable save and a clean repair path: back up saves and know how to remove a mod or repair the game through your storefront. Mods can affect files or saves; a backup is a precaution, not a guarantee of recovery.
A community installation guide discusses managers such as Vortex, load-order management, and Script Merger for script conflicts. Those are conditional tools, not required steps for every setup. Use them only when the mods you chose call for them, and follow current tool and mod documentation. The guide also cautions that unresolved conflicts can interfere with startup and that changing or removing mods may mean generated merges need to be updated. What to do if the game stops working
- Stop adding mods. Record which ones you installed or changed most recently.
- Check each affected mod’s current compatibility notes and instructions, especially after a game or mod update.
- Undo the most recent change using the mod’s documented removal steps. For a subscription, unsubscribe through the platform; for manual files, follow the author’s removal directions.
- If you use a manager or conflict tool, consult its documentation about load order and generated merges rather than deleting or rebuilding files blindly.
- Start the game again and test before restoring other mods. If the game still fails, use the repair or verification option for your storefront and preserve your backed-up saves.
Do you need REDkit to play mods?
No. CD PROJEKT RED says the PC game itself is enough to play user-created mods; REDkit is the official toolkit for creating and expanding them. The publisher says REDkit is available to owners of the PC game through Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG, and an installed PC game is required to use the toolkit. That availability statement concerns REDkit and does not establish that every mod works identically across storefront builds. Details are in the publisher’s REDkit modding information.
