For most PS5 owners, the PS5 Pro is a conditional upgrade, not a must-buy. It makes the strongest case if several games you play support its enhancements, you care about image quality or frame rate, and you have a display that can show the difference. If your favorite games already run well for you, the extra cost is harder to justify.
What you pay to upgrade
Sony’s U.S. recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $899.99 for PS5 Pro and $649.99 for PS5, a $250 difference before tax, resale proceeds, or trade-in value. The PS5 Digital Edition is $599.99. These are recommended prices, not a guarantee of what a retailer currently charges; local prices and offers can differ. Sony’s price announcement also lists £789.99 versus £569.99 in the U.K., €899.99 versus €649.99 in Europe, and ¥137,980 versus ¥97,980 in Japan for Pro and standard PS5, respectively.

At that premium, the key question is not simply whether the Pro is more powerful. It is whether the improvements matter in the games you actually play enough to justify the difference.
What changes in supported games?
Sony presents the Pro’s main advantages as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-assisted upscaling technology; advanced ray tracing; and higher or more consistent frame rates. Sony says compatible games can reach 60 frames per second, or up to 120fps, with 4K output and ray tracing. Those are capabilities for compatible titles, not a promise that every game will run at those settings. Sony’s product page cautions that “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.”

#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
In practical terms, a supported game may use the Pro’s extra headroom to deliver a sharper-looking image, improved lighting effects, or a smoother frame rate—or a combination of these. The exact result depends on the game and its implementation. Sony’s product page is an official description of advertised capabilities, not an independent comparison test.
PSSR has been updated
Sony announced an updated version of PSSR in February 2026, then said in March that broader support was rolling out through a system software update. Sony describes the update as improving image stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance consistency in supported games. Remedy’s graphics technical director Tatu Aalto said the upgraded PSSR improves image upscaling quality and stability in Control and Alan Wake 2. Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi described finer details, including character hair, being restored more naturally in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, with less flickering and afterimage. These are developer comments about specific games; they do not establish that every title or player will see the same result. Sony’s March 2026 update names supported examples.
Check your games before deciding
Sony lists more than 100 PS5 titles enhanced for Pro, and its support list can change. Among the games named on the official page for upgraded PSSR are Resident Evil Requiem, SILENT HILL f, SILENT HILL 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077.
Before buying, look up the current enhancement details for your own games rather than relying on the general “Pro enhanced” label. Support does not mean every game receives the same mix of resolution, ray-tracing, and frame-rate improvements. Sony also reported more than 50 titles using PSSR to boost effective resolution in its February 27, 2026 announcement; that is an as-of figure from that announcement, not a current independently audited total.
Will your PS5 games look better on PS5 Pro?
Some will, but not all in the same way. A game with a Pro-specific mode or updated PSSR support may benefit from the enhanced features Sony describes. For other PS5 games, Sony’s Game Boost may improve or stabilize frame rates in some supported titles, but that does not make a visible improvement guaranteed. Check the individual game’s current support and settings before treating it as a reason to upgrade.

Existing PS5 audio devices and accessories are supported, and the console uses the DualSense controller. Sony’s PS5 Pro page provides the compatibility and current game-support information.

| Factor | Pro is more compelling if… | Keep your PS5 if… |
|---|---|---|
| Games | Several games you regularly play have Pro enhancements you want. | Your main games are not enhanced, or you are satisfied with how they perform now. |
| Display and preferences | You have a 4K display and value sharper reconstruction, ray tracing, or higher frame rates. Some high-frame-rate capabilities require a compatible 60Hz or 120Hz display. | You are not especially sensitive to visual differences or lack a display that benefits from the advertised features. |
| Budget | You consider the improvements worth the $250 U.S. recommended-price premium over PS5 before tax or trade-in. | The extra cost is a priority, or you are unsure the change would matter to you. |
| Physical games | You are comfortable adding the separately sold disc drive if you use discs. | You expect a disc drive in the box or do not want an additional purchase. |
| Storage | The Pro’s 2TB built-in SSD is useful for your installed library. | More built-in storage would not affect your decision. |
This is a practical way to weigh Sony’s disclosed features, compatibility, and prices—not a measured performance comparison.
Factor in discs and storage
PS5 Pro is disc-less. If you own physical games or watch Blu-ray discs on your console, account for the cost of the separately sold PS5 Disc Drive and confirm the currently compatible product and price before purchasing. Sony announced the optional drive alongside the Pro’s 2024 launch; that announcement is not a current price source. Sony’s launch announcement explains the disc-drive option.
Recommended Free Tools
The Pro includes a 2TB built-in SSD, with some capacity reserved for system software and functions. That extra space may be useful if you keep a large library installed, but storage alone is a weak reason to upgrade if you are otherwise happy with your PS5.
Verdict for current PS5 owners
Upgrade if your regular games have Pro features you value, your display and preferences make those improvements relevant, and the price premium fits your budget. Keep your current PS5 if it already delivers the experience you want, your library has limited Pro support, or you would need to spend more on a disc drive without getting enough benefit in return. The Pro offers a more capable way to play supported games; whether it is worth buying depends on how much those specific improvements matter to you.
