Retail Mode is the Xbox environment for playing retail games and using retail services. Developer Mode switches the console to Dev Home for app development and testing, and Microsoft says Store or Live services may be unavailable there. To play in the retail environment again, choose Leave developer mode in Dev Home; the console restarts in Retail Mode.
What changes between Developer Mode and Retail Mode?
| What you notice | Retail Mode | Developer Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Home interface | The regular Xbox Home experience | Dev Home |
| Main purpose | Playing retail games and using retail services | Developing, deploying, and testing apps |
| Store and Live access | Retail environment | Microsoft says Store or Live access may be unavailable |
| Visual clue | Retail Home and Gold/Live content | Dev Home |
| Visual Studio app deployment | Not available while the console is in Retail Mode | Supported when a user is signed in; Microsoft recommends a wired connection for best deployment performance |
This describes the modes documented by Microsoft; access to particular services may depend on the service and circumstances. Developer Mode is a development environment, not simply a different Home screen.
How do you tell which mode the Xbox is in?
- Press the controller’s Home button.
- If it opens Dev Home, the console is in Developer Mode. Microsoft’s FAQ puts it plainly: “If this takes you to Dev Home, you’re in Developer Mode.”
- If you see the retail Home experience and Gold/Live content, you are in Retail Mode.
Microsoft’s FAQ covers Xbox app development in the UWP context. Its deployment guidance specifically says, “You cannot connect to your Xbox One when it is in Retail Mode.” That is an Xbox One statement, not a claim about every console model or development workflow.
How do you return to Retail Mode?
- From Dev Home, choose Leave developer mode.
- The console restarts in Retail Mode, where you can return to the retail gaming and service experience.
Microsoft’s FAQ points users to the Dev Mode Activation app and activation instructions to enter Developer Mode. Its available guidance does not establish a current, model-by-model activation walkthrough for every Xbox Series console, so the exact activation flow should not be assumed to be identical across models.

Do games, apps, and saves disappear when you leave Developer Mode?
Microsoft says installed games and apps remain when you leave the Developer Program. It also says saved games are retained in the Live account cloud profile when you were online while playing. The cloud-save qualification matters: the guidance specifically ties retention to having been online during play.
Separately, Microsoft’s Xbox One Developer Mode activation terms, last updated December 23, 2021, warn that an activated console may receive updates unavailable to ordinary retail consoles. Such updates could temporarily reduce or remove functionality. That warning is specific to those Xbox One terms and should not be generalized as a description of current update behavior on all Xbox models.

Is Developer Mode the same as an Xbox services sandbox?
No. Developer Mode and a services sandbox are separate settings with different jobs. Developer Mode selects the console environment—Dev Home for development and testing, or Retail Mode for normal use. An Xbox services sandbox isolates a title’s service configuration and selected test data.
Microsoft’s GDK sandbox documentation, shown in the gdk-2604 view last updated April 22, 2026, says Xbox One or later consoles default to the RETAIL sandbox. In a development sandbox, achievements, leaderboards, stats, and service configuration are isolated. Social information such as friends and followers is not sandboxed. Achievements earned in one sandbox do not carry over to another, and players in different sandboxes cannot play multiplayer together.

Developers switch a title back to the RETAIL sandbox when testing in the retail environment, updating system apps, or playing other games. That sandbox change is not the same operation as leaving Developer Mode on the console.

- Deployment environment: Microsoft says Visual Studio app deployment requires Developer Mode, a signed-in user, and recommends a wired connection for best deployment performance. Ethernet is a setup option, not a stated requirement.
- UWP and x86 limits: Microsoft’s UWP FAQ, last updated January 14, 2026, says x86 app development and x86 Store submissions are no longer supported. It also says UWP-based games are no longer accepted in the Xbox Store and directs game creators to ID@Xbox. These notes describe the FAQ’s UWP development and publishing context, not every Xbox developer program or publication pathway.
For Microsoft’s mode recognition, switching, service-access caveats, deployment guidance, and retention notes, see the Xbox UWP frequently asked questions. The specific Xbox One activation terms are documented on Microsoft’s Developer Mode activation terms. The distinction between console mode and title services sandbox is covered in the GDK sandbox overview.
