Choose a STEAM lab project by matching its challenge, student independence, materials, time, and safety demands to your class. The strongest projects give students a concrete problem to solve, let them build or model a solution, and leave time to test it, explain the evidence, and make improvements. The grade-band suggestions below are practical starting points, not fixed rules for every learner.
Start with the learning goal and a solvable problem
Before choosing materials or a theme, decide what students should learn and what they will do to show it. A project might focus on forces and motion, material properties, measurement, or the engineering design process. Then frame that goal as a specific problem with observable success criteria: for example, make a ball travel through a run slowly, or design a prototype that helps cool the body.
A finished object alone is weak evidence of learning. Choose a challenge that gives students a reason to compare options, observe what happens, and explain why they kept or changed a design. Science Buddies lessons can include grade-level alignment, educator background, hands-on activities, prompts, worksheets, and assessment resources; check the individual lesson to see which supports it provides.
Match the project to students’ readiness
Age bands are useful planning guides, not guarantees of what any particular student can do. Adjust the amount of direction, the decisions students make, the evidence they collect, and the complexity of their explanations. A single challenge can work across grades if those expectations change.

Elementary: make the challenge visible and manageable
Use a concrete goal, brief steps, a small set of materials, and a demonstration or worksheet where helpful. Offer a few meaningful design choices rather than leaving every decision open. Ask students to predict what will happen, test their build, and describe what they observed. For a ball-run activity, younger students might focus on getting a ping-pong ball through a route and noticing how changes affect its speed.
Middle school: make the design process explicit
Keep the hands-on problem, but ask teams to define it more carefully, gather relevant information, brainstorm and compare solutions, choose an approach, model it, test it, and refine it using evidence. This makes the project more than a construction task and gives students a repeatable way to tackle new design problems.

High school: increase planning, evidence, and tradeoff analysis
Give students more responsibility for setting criteria, planning tests, interpreting results, and defending decisions. A rubber-band car challenge, for instance, can connect design choices to simple machines, energy, force, and friction. Students can also weigh criteria such as cost, safety, reliability, aesthetics, and social, cultural, or environmental impacts.
Compare projects before committing
Use the same practical questions for each candidate activity. A project that sounds engaging may still be a poor fit if its time, equipment, supervision, or accessibility requirements do not suit the class.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Learning goal | What specific concept or process should students demonstrate, and how will they show it? |
| Challenge and independence | Are the directions, choices, and planning demands appropriate for this group? Can supports be adjusted? |
| Testing and revision | Will students be able to test a design, observe results, and make a meaningful improvement? |
| Evidence | Can students explain their choices with observations or measurements rather than only displaying a finished build? |
| Time and materials | How long does the activity take, what supplies are required, and are they affordable, available, and reusable? |
| Safety and supervision | What hazards, protective equipment, and adult supervision are involved? |
| Access and participation | Are physical access, reading demands, and different ways to contribute accounted for? |
Check the actual supply list and local availability before budgeting. The 2026 Ball Run Challenge is described as low-cost, but that description does not replace checking what your class already has or needs to obtain.
Use project examples as planning models
Ball Run Challenge: one core task, multiple grade bands
Science Buddies publishes separate elementary, middle, and high school plans for designing, building, testing, and improving a run intended to slow a ping-pong ball. It is a useful model for differentiation: preserve the central problem while varying how much guidance students receive and how much planning and explanation they are expected to do. Reused or equivalent balls may work where suitable, but verify the activity’s specific material requirements.

- 【Mechanical Bionic Fish Kit】 The finished product of the STEM project kit is a DIY electronic scale which can measure weight with precision and automatically tare. Weighing range: 0-1kg. Accuracy: 1g
- 【Working Principle】 The electronic scale is a type of weighing instrument that utilizes the principle of force-induced deformation of electronic strain gauges to output minute electrical signals, which are then transmitted to a display device for weighing and displaying the results.
- 【Components of an Electronic Scale】Electronic scales mainly consist of three parts: a load-bearing system (such as a weighing pan and weighing body), a force conversion system (such as a sensor), and a display system (such as a digital tube).
- 【Excellent Gift Choice】 The DIY electronic kit is a great gift choice for students, beginners and people who want to learn Science of Electronics and Circuit knowledge. Develop hands-on skills, gain a deeper understanding of principles through practice, and even paint it your favorite color yourself. A meaningful gift for Christmas, New Year and other holidays for friends and children.
- 【Great Service】We focus more on customer experience and product quality. And we are also very concerned about the fun of the kit, the ease of assembly, as well as the appearance of the finished product and the quality of the components. Cool It!: include safety and setup in the choice
NSTA’s Cool It! activity is designed for grades 6–8. Its listed duration is 60–120 minutes, and it specifies safety goggles and heat-resistant, nonslip oven mitts. Those requirements should shape the decision about whether the activity fits your room, available equipment, and supervision—not be left until students are ready to begin.
Rubber-band car: connect making to criteria
A grades 9–12 lesson uses readily available craft supplies to build a rubber-band-powered car. Its value for project selection is the combination of a tangible build, physics concepts, and explicit design criteria and constraints. Students can discuss why a design that performs well on one measure may involve a compromise on another.

DESCARTES: distinguish a project example from outcome evidence
The Institute of Education Sciences describes DESCARTES as a game-based simulation paired with a 3D printer, in which students design and build engineering models such as boats and airplanes, with a grades 4–7 focus. Its record describes a 2016 prototype pilot involving four grade 4 classrooms and 92 students, and also describes a later study as planned. The pilot figures are a project-specific description, not evidence of general learning outcomes; a planned study should not be treated as completed evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Adapt one challenge for mixed grades or repeat use
You do not need a different project for every grade. Keep the same central problem and vary the supports or the rigor: provide step-by-step directions and bounded choices for one group, while asking another to set criteria, plan measurements, or justify tradeoffs. You can also change constraints, measurement demands, or the expected explanation. The Ball Run Challenge’s separate elementary, middle, and high school plans illustrate this approach; DESCARTES is another example designed around a grades 4–7 focus.
For repeat use, change one meaningful constraint at a time—such as the available materials or performance criterion—so students have a reason to rethink a design rather than simply reproduce a previous build.
