Start with the position you’re assigned, then choose a champion whose usual job and level of complexity suit how you want to play. Wild Rift’s role labels are a starting point, not a guarantee that a champion can only work in one position; check the in-game position filter and the current patch before treating any pick as a “best” choice.
What each Wild Rift role asks of you
Riot calls the lanes solo and duo rather than top and bottom because the map can flip; those compass directions do not identify a consistent side for every player. The role descriptions below are broad guides to a champion’s usual job, not rules about every viable pick.
Solo lane
Riot associates solo lane with bruisers. Think of it as a self-reliant lane: you may need to manage a matchup without a lane partner, so consider whether you enjoy holding your own and fighting on your own terms. Riot’s overview of Wild Rift’s lanes explains the naming and map context.
Jungle
The jungler moves between monster camps rather than staying in one lane, and helps contest major objectives such as Baron Nashor and Drakes for team buffs. Choose this role if you like planning routes, watching the map, and deciding when to contest objectives as well as learning champion mechanics. Riot’s role overview describes the jungle’s monsters and objectives.

Mid
Riot describes mid as the spell-slinging lane and its developer article highlights a versatile, roaming playstyle that can help other lanes. It may suit you if you enjoy using abilities in lane and looking for opportunities to move across the map. See Riot’s developer discussion of mid-lane play and its lane overview.
Duo lane
Duo is played as a pair with support; Riot’s overview associates marksmen with this lane. If you like dealing marksman damage while coordinating with a partner, look for a pick that feels comfortable in that shared-lane setup. Riot’s overview describes the lane roles.
Rank #2
- Embark on an epic adventure across the land and skies of Hyrule with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition.
- Includes motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality*, charging cable (USB-C to USB-A), and more.
Support
Support shares duo lane and can contribute in different ways: some champions protect teammates, while others initiate fights. Riot developer Ed Knapp summed up the role’s team focus: “A good support brings the whole team together.” Choose the style you enjoy more—enabling and protecting allies or creating openings for them. Riot discusses support styles in its patch notes.
How to choose a champion for your position
- Confirm your assigned position. Start with the position filter in the in-game champion list and the champions highlighted for your role. Riot has described this role-based filtering in its overview of Wild Rift. Queue labels and interface details can change, so use what the live client shows.
- Pick the kind of job you want. Decide whether you would rather fight in lane, roam, clear camps and contest objectives, deal marksman damage beside a partner, or protect and enable teammates. Match that preference to a role’s broad purpose before narrowing down champions.
- Favor reliable execution over a flashy scoreline. In a ranked update published September 14, 2026, Riot’s Wild Rift Game Design Team said its performance evaluation model considers lane, champion, and role, and highlighted objective participation and teamwork. The team wrote: “Decision making, objective control, teamwork, vision, and map play all play just as important of a role to winning as your kills.” That is a useful reminder to choose a pick whose role contribution you can deliver consistently, not to judge it by kills alone. Read Riot’s ranked update.
- Learn more than one suitable champion for roles you queue. Riot’s October 13, 2022 explanation of Legendary Ranked described champion mastery access and role-tagged availability safeguards intended to avoid unsuitable off-role picks. That describes the system at that time, not a promise about today’s rules; the practical takeaway is to have more than one practiced option for your queued roles. Read Riot’s Legendary Ranked explanation.
- Check the live patch before calling a pick the strongest. Riot’s official site listed patch 7.3a on September 29, 2026, with champion and item adjustments and changes to jungle and turret-plating tuning. Balance can shift, so treat general role fit separately from current strength. Check the 7.3a notes.
How to compare two champions that fit the same role
Once you have a role and a couple of candidates, compare the play patterns you want to handle. These are decision criteria, not a live tier list or champion ranking:
Rank #3
- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Pro Controller for Nintendo Switch
- Includes motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality, and more
- Lane safety or aggressive trading: Decide whether you prefer a steadier lane or actively seeking fights.
- Jungle clear or objective pressure: Consider whether you enjoy focusing on camp routes, objective contests, or both.
- Support protection or initiation: Choose whether you would rather keep teammates safe or begin fights for them.
- Ability comfort: Favor a kit whose abilities you can use reliably in the situations your role asks you to handle.
- Pool depth: Keep alternatives you have practiced, rather than relying on one unfamiliar pick when your first choice is unavailable.
What “best champion” can—and can’t—mean
There is no current champion-by-role ranking established here, so a universal “best pick” or a win-rate claim would be misleading. The official patch 7.3a listing dated September 29, 2026 confirms that balance and jungle tuning change, but it does not itself establish which champion is strongest for each role. Use role fit to find champions you want to learn, then consult current, patch-specific evidence before making a strength claim.
Also distinguish role preference from queue assignment. Riot’s patch 6.2 notes described Ranked and Legendary Ranked preferences as preferred position, secondary position, and fill position; because that is an older interface description, check the live queue screen rather than relying on those exact labels.
