An AI-generated game mashup video depicts a scene; a traditional mod changes or extends a game so the change can be played. A clip alone does not prove a playable mod exists. The key questions are whether the game itself was modified, whether the footage records that version running, and whether another player can reproduce it. The categories can overlap: AI may help make a mod, and someone may then record gameplay of it.
What separates a mashup video from a mod?

So “AI-made” and “playable mod” are not opposites. The distinction is what the output is: a video representation, an in-game modification, or footage that combines both.
How to check whether a viral mashup is playable
- Identify the exact game and crossover. A clip may imitate a title or borrow its visual language without showing the game itself.
- Find the claimed release. Look for a named mod author, an installable package, a source repository, or a distribution page. Check that it names the same game and platform as the clip.
- Look for reproducible play. Consistent interfaces and game state, visible input-response behavior, or a continuous capture can help. These are indicators, not proof: editing can imitate continuity.
- Allow for mixed production. The possibilities include AI-generated or edited video, genuine footage of a mod, and real gameplay with generated or composited elements added.
- Compare the claim with the mod files and official policy. Mods operate as add-ons to games, but publishers set different terms for what creators may make and distribute. WIPO.
Why rights and permission depend on the game
A crossover can involve protected characters, artwork, music, code, game footage, or another publisher’s intellectual property. WIPO discusses copyright concerns around mods and copied protected elements; Larian specifically addresses third-party IP in mashups. Neither “AI mashups are illegal” nor “mods are legal” is a sound general rule. WIPO; Larian Studios.
Copyrightability of AI output is a different question from permission to use a game’s IP. The U.S. Copyright Office says its Part 2 report, published January 29, 2025, addresses copyrightability of outputs created using generative AI. Its overview also says a pre-publication Part 3 was released May 9, 2025, with a final version then forthcoming. That report does not by itself settle whether a particular mashup infringes rights or complies with a publisher’s terms. U.S. Copyright Office AI overview.

Publisher and platform rules are not interchangeable
These examples show why creators and viewers should check the policy for the exact game and platform. They are specific policies, not universal legal standards.
Larian Studios
Larian distinguishes recorded audiovisual works, such as gameplay videos and livestreams, from mods that add or change game content. Its policy says not to prompt or train generative AI on Larian IP or try to recreate that IP with generative AI for fan content. It allows sponsorships, ad revenue, and donations for audiovisual content subject to conditions; mods must remain free, with limited exceptions for public commissions and voluntary donations. Minecraft / Mojang
Mojang’s Usage Guidelines define mods as original plug-ins extending functionality and allow creators to distribute a mod, subject to conditions, but not a modded version of Minecraft. YouTube monetization
YouTube’s monetization guidance says gameplay may be monetized when appropriate publisher licensing exists or when instructional or educational commentary adds value; long stretches of gameplay alone may not qualify. This platform rule is separate from copyright permission. YouTube Help.
Bungie / Destiny
Bungie says it generally will not request takedown of monetized videos when at least 20% of the content was created by the player, with commentary, animations, graphics, or gameplay among its examples. This is Bungie’s stated approach for its content, not a universal threshold or a general YouTube rule. Bungie legal policies.

Roblox
For Roblox experiences, the Content Maturity questionnaire requires disclosure when players interact with generative AI in ways that trigger responses. Creators using third-party tools remain responsible for ensuring outputs meet Roblox standards. This concerns interactive experiences on Roblox, not standalone video clips generally.
