Treat those as separate questions. For a specific game, check its latest official release notes, FAQ, or support information before relying on a save, unlock, or achievement-related progress.
Will my progress carry over to the final game?
Not necessarily. Xbox’s Game Preview FAQ says it cannot guarantee that all progress will carry over from an unfinished game to its final release. That applies to game progress such as saves and unlocks; it is not the same as the FAQ’s separate statement about achievements already earned.
Carryover can be selective: a title may preserve some parts of a save while resetting others. Before investing in a particular game, look for a current statement from its developer or publisher and check what it says about each category:
- Save files and story state
- Inventory, recipes, and other unlocks
- Quests, levels, or campaign progression
- Multiplayer data, rank, or account progress
- Achievements already earned and any later-added achievements
A general statement that “progress carries over” may not specify every category, so use the most detailed title-specific guidance available.

Do achievements earned in Xbox Game Preview stay unlocked?
Yes. Xbox’s FAQ says: “If you get an achievement in XBOX Game Preview it will always stay earned.” This is a platform statement about achievements that have already been earned. It does not promise that a game’s achievement list will remain unchanged, that partial achievement counters will be retained, or that future achievements will recognize earlier play.
Xbox describes Game Preview as a way to preview and purchase digital games that are still works in progress. Such games may change, lack content, contain bugs, or need balancing updates; Xbox also says it cannot guarantee every game will be completed. Those conditions are why the FAQ’s achievement assurance should not be read as a guarantee about a game’s save data or development plans.

How carryover has worked in individual games
Grounded: some progress carried over, some reset
In its September 27, 2022 full-release announcement, Xbox said that players continuing earlier Grounded saves would keep items, bases, recipes, and other unlocks. Story quests and science-lab progression would reset to fit the completed story flow. The example shows why “progress carries over” and “progress is wiped” can both be misleading without specifying what is preserved.
Outriders: a specific demo carryover promise
In an April 1, 2021 launch article, Xbox said Outriders demo characters and progress would be waiting in the main game. That was a title-specific promise for that demo-to-game transition, not a general Xbox rule for other early-access or Game Preview titles.

These announcements describe those games’ transitions at the time. For a current save or update question, rely on the game’s latest official support information rather than assuming an older launch statement covers every later version.

There is no universal answer established by Xbox’s general guidance. Xbox’s June 12, 2013 achievement-system article says developers can add achievements after a game’s initial release, but it does not establish whether a particular game will award a newly added achievement for actions completed before it existed.

For a specific achievement, look for the developer’s explanation of whether previous activity counts, whether an update rechecks existing progress, and whether tracking depends on an Xbox achievement record or the game’s own save or account data. Do not assume an automatic retroactive unlock unless the game’s official guidance confirms it.
