In Order of the Sinking Star, the best beginner strategy is to read each area carefully, learn its local rules, and switch regions when a puzzle stops yielding progress. Thekla describes four distinct worlds, free backtracking, and later areas that combine puzzle systems—so exploration and observation matter more than following one fixed route.
What to expect from the game
Thekla describes Order of the Sinking Star as a narrative adventure with more than 1,000 interconnected, handcrafted puzzles, unique playable heroes, evolving mechanics, and a mystery uncovered through play and collected notes. The developer also says its four worlds contain different characters, rules, hazards, and secrets. These are the developer’s descriptions of the game’s scale and structure, not a promise that every player will encounter a particular number of puzzles or need a set amount of time. Thekla’s official game overview and FAQ say more than 500 hours await the most dedicated solvers; that is not a typical completion-time estimate.
Thekla’s September 23, 2026 overview presents the Overworld as a branching space where players can backtrack and explore regions at their own pace: “there is no single ‘right way’ to proceed.” That freedom makes it reasonable to investigate what catches your attention rather than search for a single prescribed beginner route.
How to approach puzzles as a beginner
Read the playable space before acting
Before trying an interaction, look for the boundaries of the grid, places a character can stand, and objects that differ from the scenery. This is a practical inference from the developers’ stated visual-design goals, not a documented tutorial rule. In Thekla’s September 9, 2026 production Q&A, art lead Ethan Scheu explains how contrast, scale, lighting, and atmosphere distinguish playable space from surrounding walls and background. He puts it simply: “The primary tool for this is creating visual contrast between these areas.”

Learn each region’s rules on their own terms
Thekla’s overview describes four regions with different mechanics. Treat each as a new set of rules; an idea that works in one region may not apply unchanged in another.
- Northern region: a group of heroes with complementary abilities.
- Eastern mirror realm: a reflection-based mechanic that swaps positions with reflections.
- Western cavern realm: colored beams used to activate abilities.
- Southern water region: routing and stone-skipping.
These descriptions come from Thekla’s official overview. Use them to recognize that a region has its own puzzle language, not as a substitute for discovering the exact solution in a particular room.

Change regions when you are stuck
If a path is not making sense, step away from it and explore somewhere else. The official overview says backtracking between regions is part of the Overworld’s open structure, so a stubborn puzzle need not end your session. The sources do not establish an optimal route or specific unlock requirements, so there is no need to assume that you must solve every available puzzle in sequence.
Stay alert to combinations as the world grows
Thekla says that clearing Gold Rooms connects realms and opens hybrid areas where characters and puzzle systems combine. When you reach one, consider which familiar abilities or rules might interact—but test ideas in the room rather than relying on an unverified walkthrough. A mechanic that was simple on its own may take on a new role when paired with another.
Keep the mystery intact if you want a spoiler-light start
The game’s official description frames its story as a mystery discovered through gameplay and collected notes. You can focus on the visible puzzle rules and regional structure without seeking story explanations in advance. This guide sticks to those broad systems and avoids plot revelations.
