Blizzard’s current Sombra rework removes Hack from her main abilities and replaces its combat effect with Weaken, a debuff that halves an enemy’s damage and healing output. The reported rationale is that being locked out of abilities felt frustrating for opponents, even though Hack created moments Sombra players enjoyed. Some players have lamented the change, but the available comments do not show how widespread that reaction is.
What changed for Sombra?
In the current patch notes, Hack is no longer one of Sombra’s main abilities. The replacement combat debuff, Weaken, halves an enemy’s damage and healing output. These are the details in the patch notes available as of October 7, 2026; future balance updates may change the kit.

The notes also describe a separate interaction involving health-pack and deployable hacks: taking damage while performing one interrupts it, cancels the ability, and triggers a six-second cooldown. That narrower rule is not the same as Hack’s removal from Sombra’s main abilities. Blizzard’s patch notes
Why did Blizzard remove Hack?
The patch explanation, as surfaced in reporting on the notes, says most players found being locked out of their abilities jarring, frustrating, and difficult to deal with. It also acknowledges that the effect could create moments Sombra players enjoyed. That is a summary of Blizzard’s stated rationale, not a verified direct quote from a named developer. Blizzard’s earlier discussion of the rework provides context for the scale of the change: the team described Hack as one of Sombra’s strongest abilities and said it tested combinations of changes to find an approach that worked for both Sombra players and their opponents. Removing Hack therefore affects more than balance numbers; it changes a distinctive part of how the character disrupts fights. Director’s Take: Sombra Rework
Why might Sombra players be upset?
Hack gave Sombra a way to disrupt opponents by temporarily preventing them from using abilities. That can be satisfying for the player creating an opening, but it can leave the target with fewer ways to respond. The rework shifts that tradeoff: rather than disabling abilities, Weaken reduces the target’s damage and healing output.

Some Sombra players have publicly lamented losing Hack and parts of the old playstyle. Those comments establish that some players object, not that most—or all—Sombra players do. The available discussion is anecdotal, not a representative poll, and no statistic quantifies how many players are unhappy. Overwatch player discussion

- Established: The current patch notes remove Hack from Sombra’s main abilities and describe Weaken as halving an enemy’s damage and healing output.
- Blizzard’s stated reasoning: The ability lockout was frustrating for opponents, while Hack could produce enjoyable moments for Sombra players.
- Not established: How many players oppose the change, whether that group is a majority, or whether all Sombra players share the same reaction.
The “upset” framing is best understood as a design tradeoff and a reaction voiced by some players—not as a measured prediction of the community’s overall response.
