1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor original Xbox emulation on PC, the clearest setup path is xemu: connect a gamepad, confirm your operating system recognizes it, then select it in xemu’s controller settings. If it is missing from that menu, the usual issue is that SDL does not have a gamepad mapping for the device—or another application is intercepting it.
Configure a controller in xemu
- Connect the controller. Plug it in or pair it, then verify that your operating system recognizes it. Fix connection or driver problems at the operating-system level before changing xemu settings.
- Select it in xemu. Open xemu’s input/controller configuration and choose the connected gamepad for the player. xemu uses SDL3 for controller input and supports up to four gamepads.
- Test the full layout. Check the face buttons, D-pad, both sticks, stick clicks and analog triggers in a game or an available input display. If the controls are scrambled, look for a suitable mapping rather than assuming the controller is defective.
xemu’s controller selector lists devices SDL recognizes as standardized gamepads—devices with mapped buttons, sticks and triggers. A controller can therefore appear in the operating system but remain absent from xemu.
Controller compatibility and adapters
xemu’s controller documentation says Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers should work out of the box on Windows and Linux. The documented macOS guidance calls for an additional driver; check the current driver project’s instructions for your version of macOS before installing anything.
The same documentation says DualShock 4 controllers work on all platforms without extra driver installation or configuration. That does not mean every device is automatically mapped: xemu still depends on SDL recognizing it as a gamepad.

Using an original Xbox controller
An original Xbox controller needs a USB-compatible adapter to connect to a PC. xemu’s documentation lists Xb2XInput for Windows, 360Controller for macOS, and says Linux is usually supported out of the box through xpad. Driver support can change, so consult the current driver instructions for your system. Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners on Windows or Linux generally do not need an adapter.
Fix a controller that does not appear in xemu
- Check host detection. Confirm the operating system sees the controller. If it does not, troubleshoot the cable, wireless pairing or platform driver first.
- Check xemu’s log. An “unmapped joystick” message indicates SDL sees the connected device as a generic joystick, but does not have the standardized gamepad mapping xemu needs for its selector.
- Add an SDL gamepad mapping. The xemu controller guide recommends the community SDL_GameControllerDB. Download
gamecontrollerdb.txt, then point xemu to the local file in the[input]section ofxemu.toml:
[input]
gamecontrollerdb_path = "/path/to/gamecontrollerdb.txt"
Replace the example with the file’s actual location. xemu loads the external mapping file on startup and reports loaded mappings in its console or xemu.log. If the database does not list your controller, follow its instructions to generate an appropriate mapping string.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
- Check for input interception. Another application, including Steam Input, may have exclusive access to the controller. Close or adjust that application, then check xemu again.
- Retest every control. Test axes as well as buttons: both sticks, stick clicks and triggers can be mapped incorrectly even when the face buttons work.
Use the keyboard as a fallback
xemu supports keyboard input for basic control. Its documented defaults include A, B, X and Y mapped to their corresponding keys; Backspace for Back; Return for Start; number keys 1–5 for white, black, left stick, right stick and xemu navigation; arrow keys for the D-pad; and letter-key clusters for stick directions and triggers. See the complete xemu keyboard map rather than treating this abbreviated list as the full layout.
Using RetroArch or XQEMU instead
These applications have different input settings from xemu. Do not apply xemu’s SDL3 database-file instructions to either one.

RetroArch controller autoconfiguration
RetroArch matches controller profiles using the controller name, vendor ID and product ID. Depending on your platform, profiles may already be bundled; otherwise use Main Menu → Online Updater → Update Autoconfig Profiles. If your controller has no suitable profile, follow this sequence from the RetroArch autoconfiguration guide:
- Open Settings → Input → User 1 Binds → User 1 Bind All and bind the controls.
- Test the resulting layout.
- Choose User 1 Save Autoconfig to save the profile.
Manual bindings take precedence in RetroArch. If they interfere with testing a saved profile, use User 1 Bind Default All to reset them before testing again.

XQEMU input options
XQEMU documents SDL2-supported gamepad input, keyboard input and advanced USB passthrough. Its example SDL2 command-line option is -device usb-xbox-gamepad-sdl,index=0; the documentation says this path is known to work well with Xbox 360 and DualShock 4 controllers with little to no setup, apart from any required platform drivers. The keyboard path uses -device usb-xbox-gamepad. These are XQEMU options, not xemu settings; see the XQEMU input guide.
Connect more than one player
xemu supports up to four gamepads, which can be connected as multiple controllers would be on a real Xbox. The number of controllers xemu accepts does not guarantee that every game supports the same number of players; check the individual game’s multiplayer support.
