For the simplest supported route, start with Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager. Choose Nexus Mods when the specific mod you want is available there but not in the in-game browser, and follow that mod’s installation instructions. The routes can coexist: some manually installed mods can still appear in the game’s load order. For console play, the in-game browser is the practical choice; for multiplayer, coordinate mod versions and load order before starting a shared campaign.
What’s the difference between Nexus Mods and the in-game Mod Manager?
The in-game Mod Manager
Larian introduced Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager and modding Toolkit with Patch 7. The manager is the game’s browser and load-order interface for supported mods, making it the natural starting point if you want a straightforward route. See Larian’s Community Update #27.

Nexus Mods
Nexus Mods is a third-party site that hosts mods; it is not the name of Larian’s in-game manager. A mod hosted on Nexus may call for manual installation or an external tool, depending on its author’s instructions. For example, one Nexus mod page describes using BG3 Mod Manager and mentions possible Vortex or manual-install options. That example applies to that mod, not every Nexus download: check the individual mod page and its instructions.
Which should you use?

Neither route is universally safer, faster, or more compatible. The choice depends on the mod you want, the platform you play on, and its current instructions. Catalog size comparisons are not established by the cited sources, so a general claim that one catalog is larger would not be a sound basis for choosing.

Can you use Nexus mods with the in-game manager?
Sometimes. Larian says manually downloaded mods can still be recognized by the game and managed in its mod load order. That allows some third-party mods to coexist with the in-game interface, but it does not mean every Nexus mod can be installed, updated, or managed through the same steps. Check the specific mod’s instructions and compatibility notes before combining workflows.
Use the instructions on the mod page as the authority for its installation method. A page may specify an external manager or manual steps; do not assume that downloading a file from Nexus automatically adds it to the in-game browser. What to check before installing or updating a mod
- Availability: Search for the exact mod in the in-game browser before choosing an installation route.
- Platform: Confirm that the mod supports your platform. Console curation and cross-platform limits mean PC availability does not guarantee console availability.
- Installation method: Follow the author’s current instructions for the individual mod, including any required external tool or manual steps.
- Version and compatibility: Check whether the mod page says it supports your current game version. The cited sources do not establish a universal update schedule, so consult the mod page and Larian’s mod troubleshooting guidance for current details.
Before starting a modded multiplayer campaign
Coordinate the setup with every player before loading a shared save. Larian’s synchronization guidance says players loading a modded save or playing multiplayer with mods need matching mod versions; its community FAQ also advises using the same mods in the same load order.
