If Baldur’s Gate 3 mods are not appearing or loading, first identify whether you installed them through the in-game Mod Manager or a third-party tool. Update supported mods, check that third-party load orders were exported, and then disable mods to see whether the game still fails. The right fix depends on which path you use; no single repair works for every mod problem.
First identify how you installed the mod
Baldur’s Gate 3 has two different mod paths, and their fixes are not interchangeable. Larian distinguishes mods managed in its in-game Mod Manager from third-party mods installed with other tools or files. Larian’s Mod Issues FAQ and its Official Mod Support announcement describe the supported in-game manager and the separate third-party ecosystem.

Symptoms such as a modded save stopping at a loading percentage, a launch crash, missing or overlapping UI, missing makeup or face textures, or naked characters in character creation can be associated with mods, but none proves that a particular mod is at fault.
If an in-game mod is missing or outdated
- Open the Mod Manager and select Installed. Check the affected mod for an Update button. Larian says the button appears when that mod needs an update; use it to update from the interface.
- Retry the affected save or launch. If the issue remains, disable installed mods and try again. This separates a mod-related problem from one that occurs even with mods off.
- For multiplayer, compare every player’s setup. Each party member needs the exact same mods and versions. Check Installed for the Update indicator before joining or hosting.
Larian says supported mods aim for greater compatibility and cross-platform availability, but it also warns that updates, dependencies, and conflicts can affect behavior. Support does not guarantee that every combination will work.

If a third-party mod is not loading after an update
A major game update can leave older third-party files behind. Larian advises removing existing mod files when launch or in-game problems occur, particularly after a major update. Treat this as a cleanup step, not a universal fix: confirm you are working in the correct Baldur’s Gate 3 installation and Windows profile before deleting anything.
- Locate the game installation. The launcher’s gear menu can open the installation folder. In that folder, inspect
Data/ModsandData/Public, if those folders exist, for third-party mod files that may be stale. - Check the profile folder separately. If you are not using a new profile for the current patch, Larian says to consider deleting
modsettings.lsxin the profile folder as part of this cleanup. It stores mod configuration, so removing it can discard the existing third-party load-order state. - Check the Windows Mods location. BG3 uses local AppData rather than Documents. The Mods folder shortcut is
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Mods.
Do not assume every item in these locations is obsolete. If you are unsure which installation or profile is active, use the launcher’s folder shortcut and confirm the path before removing files.
If you use BG3 Mod Manager, verify the setup and export
BG3 Mod Manager is a third-party utility, so simply seeing a mod in its list does not mean the game has received the intended load order. Its README and setup instructions explain that the selected order must be exported to the game.
- Run Baldur’s Gate 3 once. This creates the user profile and Mods folders. New profiles must be created in-game.
- Follow the utility’s documented prerequisites and use its latest release. Avoid relying on an exact manager or Script Extender version copied from an older guide; compatibility depends on your current game build and the utility’s current release.
- Keep the portable manager outside protected
Program Files. Confirm that its automatically detected paths point to the correct game and user profile. - If path detection is wrong, set paths manually. In BG3 Mod Manager, open Settings → Preferences, set the paths, save, then refresh.
- Select the intended Public profile and campaign. Arrange the active mods in the order you want to use.
- Export the load order to the game. Click Export Load Order to Game or use File → Export Order to Game. This writes the
modsettings.lsxfile the game reads.
If the load order disappears or resets
- Do not put subfolders inside the local Mods folder. The BG3 Mod Manager maintainer warns that this can prevent mods from being detected as expected.
- Check Game Data Path. It must point to the game’s
Datafolder, which contains files such asGustav.pak. - Make sure a campaign is selected and the order is exported. Selecting mods in the utility without exporting does not update the game’s load-order file.
- If
modsettings.lsxresets when the game launches, treat it as a sign of a mod error. The manager README says the game clears the order when one or more mods encounter an error. Disable or remove mods in a controlled way, then export again.
Disable mods to decide where to escalate
Larian recommends disabling mods and retrying the problem. If the game works with mods disabled, the issue is likely tied to a mod or its interaction with the current game setup: contact the mod author and leave details on the mod listing. If the failure continues with mods disabled, report it to Larian support as a possible base-game issue.

If the launcher shows a data-mismatch warning, Larian says Windows users can inspect %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache for steam_<Current.Version.Number>_alteredFiles.txt, or a similarly named galaxy_... file for GOG. The file can help identify altered game files; it is not, by itself, proof that a mod caused the gameplay problem.
