Choose a main damage dealer whose combat style you enjoy, then build a three-Resonator team around how that character uses field time and benefits from switches. Pair them with a compatible partner and add sustain when it helps you survive the content. There is no established universally best first pick for October 2026; the right choice depends on your roster, preferred play style, and the characters’ kits.
What makes a team balanced in Wuthering Waves?
A party has three Resonators, but only one is active on the field at a time. Combat therefore depends on more than assigning three roles: you switch between characters to set up effects and keep a useful rotation going. When the relevant Concerto condition is met, a switch can activate the outgoing character’s Outro Skill and the incoming character’s Intro Skill. Read those effects together to see whether one character meaningfully prepares or strengthens the next.
Kuro Games describes the combat approach as “Fast Pace Action”, “Visually Appealing Combat Representation”, and “Strategy Oriented Team Building” in its Developer’s Notes – Combat System. The notes say Concerto Energy can build through attacks, skills, Echo Abilities, and other actions, and is used to trigger Concerto Effects. In practice, a balanced team is a rotation that makes good use of those effects while staying alive—not simply three characters with high damage.
- Main damage dealer: The character you most want to play and invest in, and who spends a meaningful share of the rotation dealing damage.
- Partner or enabler: A character whose setup, damage, or switch effects support the main damage dealer’s plan.
- Sustain: A healer or other survival support when the encounter, your current progression, or your comfort level calls for it.
Those are useful jobs to consider, not a rigid rule that every team needs three separate roles or three different elements. Judge the actual skills and rotation.

How to choose your first main character
Start with the characters you already have, including characters obtained through play. You do not need to assume that spending money or rerolling is required. A popular character is not automatically the best fit if you dislike their combat feel, lack a workable partner, or do not want to invest in what their build requires.
- Choose a combat style you enjoy. Consider the character’s weapon feel, combos, time on the field, and how comfortable you are switching to other Resonators. Weapon type—Broadblade, Gauntlets, Pistols, Rectifier, or Sword—limits which weapons they can equip and offers a broad clue to how they fight.
- Check how they fit your roster. Decide whether they can anchor a team or fill a role your current characters lack. A character who complements a usable roster may be a more practical first investment than another character who duplicates a job you already have covered.
- Read the character’s kit and a current build page. Note their field-time needs, damage type, energy requirements, preferred partner effects, weapon type, and any specific build requirements. The official guide portal is a place to recheck current character information; confirm that any teammate suggestions match the version you are playing.
- Consider the investment you can support. Look at the ascension and Forte materials they need, whether you have a usable compatible weapon, and how demanding their Echo setup is. Pick someone you can reasonably build rather than spreading scarce early resources across several characters at once.
- Check whether the choice suits the content you want to clear. Team needs can change with encounters and progression. Revisit the decision if you reach content that requires multiple teams or obtain a character that fills a real roster gap.
How to choose teammates and make switching work
Once you have a main damage dealer, look for a partner whose effects suit that character—not merely one who shares an element. Elements identify damage types: Glacio, Fusion, Electro, Aero, Spectro, and Havoc. The label alone does not establish whether two Resonators work well together; their skills, switch effects, and rotation do.

Compare the outgoing character’s Outro with the incoming character’s Intro. Ask what the first character contributes, what the next character receives, and whether the timing lets your main damage dealer make use of the benefit. Add a sustain character if staying alive is a problem or the content makes it useful. Check each character’s current kit rather than assuming every support or sustain option suits every damage dealer.
- Use the skills or other actions your rotation needs to set up the next character.
- Build Concerto Energy through combat actions, including attacks, skills, and Echo Abilities.
- Switch when the relevant Concerto condition is met so the outgoing and incoming characters’ switch effects can activate.
- Use the incoming character’s window, then continue the rotation while watching whether support effects remain active.
Practice the sequence with the characters you actually own. A sound rotation is one you can execute reliably; a theoretically attractive pairing is less useful if its timing or field-time demands do not suit you.

What to invest in first
Build one functional team before trying to perfect several. Early investment is more effective when concentrated on the characters and roles you will use, rather than divided thinly across the roster.
- Level and ascend your main damage dealer. Prioritize the basic progression needed to keep them effective for your current content.
- Upgrade important Forte nodes. Check a character-specific guide for which abilities matter to that character instead of upgrading indiscriminately.
- Equip a usable compatible weapon. Weapon type determines what a Resonator can equip. A sensible weapon that you already have may be enough while you develop the team.
- Give them appropriate Echoes. Echoes are in-game equipment that provide stats and an active ability; they are not physical accessories. The system uses five Echo slots, Echo classes, and COST limits. Check a character-specific build guide before spending tuning materials.
- Develop the partner and sustain next. Bring them up enough to do their jobs in the rotation, then deepen their builds as your resources and content demands allow.
Exact Forte priorities, Echo choices, weapons, and material requirements vary by character. Check current character-specific guidance before committing limited materials.

Compare choices without relying on a tier list
If you are deciding between two characters or prospective teammates, weigh the same practical questions for each. This makes the trade-offs clearer than relying on rarity, element matching, popularity, or a tier list with no clear date or version.
