Choose the class and role or playstyle you want first, then pick from the races currently eligible to play that class. Once you have a shortlist, compare faction access, character fantasy, unlock effort, and racial traits that matter to the activities you actually enjoy. There is no universally best race established by the available official sources.
Start with the class and the way you want to play
If you already know your class, use that as the starting point: the game restricts which races can play which classes, so eligibility is your first filter. If you are still deciding, first identify the role or play loop you want—such as dealing damage, healing, or tanking—then choose a class that supports it. The available official sources do not establish a universally best class or race for any role.
Check which races can currently play your class
Use the live character-creation screen to confirm the exact race-and-class combination and any requirements. Blizzard’s official playable-races page organizes races by Alliance and Horde and lists Allied Races separately; it says those Allied Races must be recruited in-game before they can be played.
Class access and unlock conditions have changed over time, so older race/class charts can be misleading. Blizzard’s October 25, 2022 announcement made Mages, Priests, and Rogues available to all playable races, while noting that Allied Race unlock requirements still applied. In July 2023 update notes, Blizzard documented expanded Warlock access and a change to Allied Race unlocking: at that time, a level-40 character on the account was sufficient. Those are dated changes, not confirmation of today’s rules. The character-creation screen is the practical check for your current game.
#1 Best Overall
Filter by faction, then choose the character you want
If you have a faction preference, keep only races available to that faction. If you do not, decide based on the character you would most enjoy playing: appearance, customization, story, and attachment to a race are all legitimate criteria. Blizzard presents race choice in the context of Alliance and Horde allegiance, so faction access is part of the decision rather than a detail to check afterward.
Judge racial traits by your activities
Racial traits can serve different purposes, so compare their current descriptions against the content you actually play rather than treating a list as a performance ranking. Blizzard’s 2024 Earthen announcement illustrates the range: it describes traits involving gathering, armor, exploration experience, a self-selected Well Fed benefit using gems, and an activated Azerite attack or healing effect. These examples show varied kinds of utility; they do not establish that Earthen is best for a particular class or activity. Check current trait details in-game before making them a deciding factor.
