Yes, a gaming PC can match a console’s performance in a particular game and target configuration—but there is not enough public information to build a verified PC equivalent to Microsoft’s Project Helix yet. Microsoft says Helix is in development with AMD around a custom SoC and is intended to play Xbox console and PC games. Developer alpha hardware is planned to ship beginning in 2027; Microsoft has not published a complete retail specification or price. For a current comparison, PS5 Pro offers a useful reference, but it is not a stand-in for Helix.
What “matching” a console actually means
A console does not map cleanly to one PC graphics card. A meaningful comparison holds the game and output target constant, then looks at the whole experience: resolution, frame rate and consistency, graphics settings, ray tracing, and whether the image is rendered natively or upscaled. CPU demands, memory allocation, storage, game optimization, and support for the titles you want also matter.
Upscaling makes headline resolution especially easy to misread. A game can output a high-resolution image while rendering internally at a lower resolution, so output resolution alone does not tell you how much rendering work the hardware performed. Sony says PS5 Pro uses PSSR, and announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution as a new AI-upscaling tier for PS5 in October 2026. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles using the new tier, while describing PSSR as the gold standard on PS5 Pro. These are Sony’s platform and game-support statements, not evidence that a PC card with a particular specification will deliver the same result. Sony’s announcement
Project Helix: why an exact PC build is premature
Microsoft’s March 11, 2026 announcement describes Project Helix as a next-generation Xbox being developed with AMD around a custom SoC. Microsoft says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Jason Ronald, Xbox VP of Next Generation, wrote that the company plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer-hardware milestone, not a retail launch date or a published consumer specification. Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement

- Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
Without a full specification, there is no defensible way to name a desktop GPU, CPU, or complete parts list as a verified Helix match. Microsoft’s announcement also gives no retail price, so a Helix-versus-PC price comparison would be speculation. Once the console’s specifications and actual game performance are public, comparisons can be made against specific games and settings rather than inferred from its development announcement.
PS5 Pro is a current reference, not a Helix specification
Sony’s published PS5 Pro figures are comparisons with the original PS5, not direct mappings to PC components. Sony says PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the original PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. The “up to” figure is Sony’s stated maximum, and Sony says the benefit varies by game. None of those figures establishes that a particular desktop graphics card is equivalent. PS5 Pro can still help frame a present-day question such as “What GPU might I compare with a PS5 Pro?” TechRadar suggests an RX 7700 XT or RTX 4060 in its discussion, but describes its proposed PC as theoretical: it is extrapolating from Sony’s performance claim and says the exact PS5 Pro specifications are not known. Treat those cards as editorial comparison options, not tested or validated equivalents. TechRadar’s PS5 Pro PC-equivalent discussion
What existing PC estimates can—and cannot—tell you
Base PS5 estimates
PC Gamer suggests an AMD RX 6700 as an estimate for the base PS5’s raw graphics performance. It also points out that the console’s 16GB of memory is shared between the GPU and system, unlike the separate system RAM and graphics memory typically specified for a desktop PC. The article cautions that TFLOP figures are not wholly comparable. This is an estimate for the base PS5 only; it should not be carried over to PS5 Pro or Project Helix. PC Gamer’s PS5 GPU comparison

System checklists are not equivalence claims
AMD’s Advantage system guidance lists a Ryzen 5000-series-or-newer CPU, Radeon RX 6000-series-or-newer GPU, at least 16GB of memory, and a 512GB NVMe SSD for a Windows-based system meeting its defined Advantage criteria. That is AMD’s vendor checklist, not a recommended build for matching any console. It does not establish how a PC with those components performs against a console in a particular game. How to make a fair PC-versus-console comparison
- Choose the console and game. State whether the target is the base PS5, PS5 Pro, or a future system such as Project Helix, and use the same game on both platforms where possible.
- Set the display target. Compare the same output resolution and distinguish native rendering from upscaling.
- Match performance goals. Compare frame rate and consistency, not just a peak figure or a single resolution label.
- Compare image features. Include graphics settings, ray tracing, and the game-specific upscaling options available on each platform.
- Price complete systems. Compare the full PC—including CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, and the remaining required parts—with the console, rather than comparing a GPU price with a console price.
- Account for what you value beyond performance. Consider the games and services you use, console-specific titles, and whether PC flexibility matters to you.
How much does a PC that performs like a console cost?
There is no reliable single price without first naming the console, game, performance target, region, and PC parts. The PS5 Pro provides one current US price reference: Sony announced a recommended retail price of $899.99 effective April 2, 2026. This is Sony’s US price for PS5 Pro, not a Project Helix price; console pricing varies by region and can change. Sony’s US PS5 pricing announcement

That price does not identify a PC build with equal performance. The third-party PS5 Pro GPU suggestions above are not validated equivalences, and a complete PC’s cost depends on every component and current local pricing. Microsoft has not announced a Project Helix retail price in its public development announcement.
