No. Square Enix says you can understand FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH without first playing FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE or REMAKE INTERGRADE. Rebirth also includes an in-game recap video for players who want a refresher. Playing Remake first is optional, but it lets you experience the preceding story firsthand.
Can you start Rebirth without playing Remake?
Yes. Square Enix’s official Rebirth FAQ says players do not need to have played Remake or Remake Intergrade to understand Rebirth. The FAQ also says Rebirth’s in-game menu offers a story recap video of Remake for anyone who wants to catch up.
That makes Remake a choice, not an entry requirement. The FAQ describes the recap as a way to learn about the story so far; it does not promise that the video covers every detail.
Should you play Remake first or use the recap?
| Route | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Start Rebirth | Skip the earlier game and use Rebirth’s in-game recap if you want context, as described in Square Enix’s FAQ. | You want to begin Rebirth now and are comfortable getting the earlier story through a recap. |
| Play Remake first | Experience the preceding story firsthand. PlayStation describes Rebirth as a direct continuation of Remake in its Rebirth overview. | You would rather see the earlier story in full before continuing. |
There is no universally right route: the choice depends on how much context you want before Rebirth and whether you want to play another full game first.

Do Remake save files carry over to Rebirth?
No. PlayStation says Remake save files do not transfer into Rebirth. Square Enix separately describes optional save-data bonuses, including bonus items associated with eligible prior-game save files in its save-data bonus announcement. Those rewards are separate from being able to start or play Rebirth: the sources do not make finishing Remake or carrying over a character build a prerequisite.
