At VALORANT Champions Shanghai 2026, 16 teams begin in four groups. The top two from each group advance to an eight-team double-elimination playoff. Group matches are best-of-three, and a team is eliminated after two group-stage losses; in playoffs, a first loss sends a team to the lower bracket and a second ends its run. Riot’s published format does not specify the detailed draw, playoff seeding or group tiebreakers.
How the 2026 Champions format works
Champions Shanghai is the 2026 season-ending global event. Its 16-team field is divided into four GSL groups, followed by an eight-team double-elimination playoff. The format and details below are specific to this edition, not a guarantee of the rules for future Champions events.
How teams qualify
The four VCT territories—Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China—each send four teams. Under Riot’s 2026 handbook, those places go to the territory’s top two Stage 2 playoff finishers and its top two Championship Point earners. See the Champions Shanghai handbook and Riot’s 2026 season overview.
How the group stage works
There are four GSL groups, each with one team from each of the four territories. Group matches are best-of-three, and the top two teams in each group move on, leaving eight teams for playoffs. Riot’s event guide describes the group-stage elimination rule simply: “Lose two and you’re out.”

In practical terms, a team can withstand one group-stage defeat but not two. The official pages reviewed identify the groups as GSL but do not publish a complete match-by-match sequence or explain how a tie in group records is resolved. The official Champions Shanghai event guide and live tournament overview provide the published format.
How the playoff bracket works
The eight group survivors enter a double-elimination bracket. A team that loses once remains in contention through the lower bracket; a second playoff loss eliminates it. Playoff matches are best-of-three, except for the lower final and grand final, which are best-of-five.

What is known—and not known—about seeding
Riot’s published format does not state the detailed group draw or seeding procedure, the playoff bracket seeds, or the opening playoff pairings. It also does not say whether a group winner receives a particular advantage, such as a bye. Those details should not be inferred from the GSL label or from the number of teams advancing.
The official pages reviewed also do not give group-stage tiebreak criteria for teams with equal records. Until Riot publishes those event-specific details, the supported explanation is limited to the structure, match lengths and advancement rules described above.
