What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Look for an attributable statement from the game’s developers or official production material that names the real person and explains exactly what came from them. A scan, resemblance, acting credit or motion-capture role can establish a connection to a character’s appearance or performance; none alone proves the character’s personality, biography or story was based on that person.
Start by asking what “based on” means
A character can have several real-world contributors, and their roles are not interchangeable. Before evaluating a claim, separate the possible connections:
| Claim | What it can establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Physical likeness or model scan | A real person’s face or body was used as a basis for the character’s appearance. | That the person’s personality, biography, choices or story were copied. |
| Voice or acting | A performer contributed the character’s voice or acted the role. | That the fictional character is based on the performer as a person. |
| Motion capture or stunt work | A performer contributed movement, action or fighting performance. | That the character’s identity or life story came from that performer. |
| Creative or narrative inspiration | A creator used a person as a reference or inspiration for some aspect of the character. | That every element of the finished character derives from that person. |
When someone asks, “Who is this character modeled after?” the answer may concern only the face. When they ask whether a character was “inspired by” someone, the evidence might instead concern writing or personality. State the narrower claim the source supports.
What counts as reliable evidence?
Prefer direct, attributable production statements
The strongest evidence is a statement by a named creator—such as a game director, creative director or character designer—or official production material that identifies both the character and the person and explains their connection. Note who spoke, their role, the game, where and when the statement appeared, and what it actually says. An official account of one game’s production confirms that production detail; it is not proof of a universal industry practice.

Use resemblance as a lead, not a conclusion
A character resembling a public figure or performer is not enough to establish a specific-person basis. Design can combine influences, and a scanned face can be adjusted. Without reliable attribution, treat similarity as a reason to investigate—not confirmation.
Look for corroboration when the claim matters
For a prominent or disputed claim, seek another attributable account. Multiple articles repeating the same unsourced assertion do not amount to independent confirmation. If reliable sources establish only a scan or performance role, report only that; if none identifies a specific basis, say the claim is unconfirmed.

Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 7: scanned likeness, adjusted by the team
Director Koji Nakanishi explained that photogrammetry scans of a real model were used as a basis for Chris Redfield’s face, but the scan was not used exactly as-is: designers adjusted facial details to fit their conception of the character. The team also consulted a military adviser about uniform elements and their appearance. These are production references for likeness and costume; they do not show that Chris’s entire identity or story came from the model. Nakanishi on the making of Resident Evil 7.
Jodie Holmes in Beyond: Two Souls: writing reference, likeness and performance
Director David Cage described using Ellen Page’s images as writing references, writing with her in mind, and scanning her face and body for Jodie. He also discussed differences between recording face and voice and capturing performance. These details support several distinct connections—creative reference, physical likeness and performance—not one undifferentiated claim that every part of Jodie was copied from Page. Haroona in Unknown 9: Awakening: collaborative design and stunt contribution

A practical checklist for verifying a claim
- Name the exact claim. Identify the game, character and alleged real person. Decide whether the claim concerns appearance, voice, acting, motion capture, stunt work, writing inspiration or the character’s broader identity.
- Find the closest source. Check the developer, publisher, official game site and named creators for interviews, production notes or behind-the-scenes accounts.
- Check provenance. Record who made the statement, their role, where it appeared and when. Prefer a first-hand account over an unattributed repetition.
- Keep the wording precise. “Face modeled on,” “voice performed by,” “motion captured by,” “inspired by” and “based on” describe different relationships. Don’t upgrade one into another.
- Match the conclusion to the evidence. Report the specific connection the source confirms. If reliable attribution is absent, say that available sources do not confirm a specific basis rather than guessing.
