Inside-Out vs. Base-Station VR Tracking: Which Setup Is Right for You?

Inside-out tracking avoids external stations; SteamVR base stations suit compatible systems where clear placement is practical. Compare setup and compatibility before choosing.

Choose inside-out tracking if you want a headset that tracks its movement without installing external stations. Choose a SteamVR base-station setup if your headset and controllers support it, you want room-scale coverage, and you can place the stations with clear paths to the tracked devices. Neither method is universally more accurate: the available official documentation does not provide a controlled, head-to-head performance comparison.

How the two tracking methods work

Inside-out tracking

Inside-out tracking uses cameras and sensors built into the headset to observe movement and the surrounding environment. That lets the headset determine its position without external tracking stations. Meta notes that environmental variation, including lighting, can affect tracking, and its setup includes configuring a boundary for the play area. Meta explains headset tracking and its tracking technology.

SteamVR base-station tracking

Base stations are external components that send tracking signals to compatible devices. The stations do not make an arbitrary headset or controller compatible: the tracked hardware must support the relevant SteamVR Tracking generation. VIVE advises keeping the path between stations and trackers unobstructed. VIVE’s Base Station 2.0 guidance describes the equipment and signal-path requirement.

“Lighthouse tracking” is often used as shorthand for this kind of external SteamVR tracking. In practice, confirm the station generation and support for each headset and controller rather than relying on the label alone.

Which setup fits your room and play style?

Decision Inside-out headset tracking SteamVR base-station tracking
Equipment in the room The tracking cameras and sensors are on the headset; the described method does not require external tracking stations. Requires compatible stations and tracked devices. Valve recommends at least two stations for room-scale Index use.
Setup work Configure the headset’s play area or boundary. Lighting and other environmental variation may affect tracking. Place and secure stations so their signal paths to tracked devices are not obstructed.
Compatibility check Check tracking support for the exact headset and controllers. Check the exact headset, controllers, and station generation together. Not all combinations work.
Hardware scope Tracking is integrated into the headset hardware. Allow for compatible stations and, where needed, mounting or placement equipment.

Choose inside-out if simplicity is the priority

This approach avoids installing external tracking stations for the tracking method described here. It still calls for a suitable play area and boundary setup, and the headset relies on its cameras and sensors observing the environment.

Consider base stations for a compatible room-scale system

Base stations are a practical option when you are choosing compatible SteamVR hardware and can arrange suitable station placement. They add hardware and positioning work, so confirm the complete device combination before buying or setting up components.

Check compatibility before choosing stations

Station version matters. Valve’s Base Station 2.0 listing identifies SteamVR Tracking 2.0 devices it supports, including Valve Index and HTC Vive Pro headsets and Valve Index Controllers and HTC Vive Pro Controllers. It also says the 2.0 stations are not compatible with original standard HTC Vive products. Valve’s Base Station 2.0 listing provides its compatibility details.

For Index, Valve recommends at least two stations for room-scale play. Steam Support says Index requires at least one station and recommends two; it also supports original Vive stations as well as version 2.0 stations. Those statements address Index and do not make every headset, controller, and station combination interchangeable. Check the documentation for your exact hardware. Steam Support’s Index requirements lists the requirements.

Plan station placement and installation

For VIVE base-station setup, the documented minimum station height is 0.5 m (1.6 ft). VIVE recommends wall mounting where possible and describes tripods, light stands, or stable surfaces as alternatives when the room does not allow that placement. Follow the instructions for the exact hardware and install stations securely. VIVE’s base-station installation instructions cover placement options.

  • Choose positions that keep the tracking paths to compatible devices clear.
  • Use a stable mounting or placement option appropriate to the room.
  • Verify the station generation and device compatibility before completing the setup.

Is one method more accurate?

The official Meta, Valve, and VIVE documentation cited here describes how the systems work, setup considerations, and supported hardware; it does not establish a universal performance winner through a controlled comparison. Tracking results depend on the specific headset and controllers, room, and activity, so a blanket accuracy claim would go beyond the evidence.
