Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a PS5 game looks choppy, first check whether it happens in one game, several games, or other content too. A problem limited to one game points first to that game’s graphics or performance settings and current publisher updates; symptoms across games, or flicker and signal loss, make the PS5’s video output and HDMI connection more relevant. These clues help narrow the cause, but do not prove it.
Start by narrowing down where the problem occurs
- One game only: Check that game’s performance or graphics mode, install any available game update, and look for current known issues from its publisher. Sony’s support guidance does not diagnose the frame pacing of individual games.
- Several games: Check the PS5’s output signal and whether the display supports the selected resolution, VRR, or 120 Hz mode. Temporarily disabling a high-refresh feature can help determine whether the display behaves differently.
- Flicker, black screen, or unexpected resolution: Prioritize the display, HDMI port, cable, and console video-output settings. Those symptoms concern the signal path; they do not by themselves show that a game’s frame rate is dropping.
Check what video signal the PS5 is sending
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Current Video Output Signal and the selected resolution, VRR, 120 Hz Output, and Video Transfer Rate. The PS5 reports details about the connected HDMI device, including resolution, VRR, and HDR. Confirm that the chosen mode is supported by both the display and the game; a general HDMI 2.1 label alone does not confirm that a particular TV port supports the combination you want.
Test VRR carefully
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can adjust the display refresh rate in real time when the TV or monitor and game support it. Sony notes that results vary by TV. If the game does not support VRR, you can test Apply to Unsupported Games: Sony says to turn it on to stabilize frame rate in unsupported games, but advises turning it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Treat it as a reversible compatibility test, not a guaranteed fix. Sony’s PS5 resolution and VRR guidance explains the available options.
Test 120 Hz Output
120 Hz Output enables 120 Hz video output for compatible displays and games; it does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. If a supported game’s output has problems on a monitor or another display device, Sony recommends turning this setting off and checking whether the picture stabilizes.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Use Video Transfer Rate for flicker
If the screen flickers, Sony suggests trying Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2. These settings limit output and may improve picture quality. Change one setting at a time so you can see whether it affects the symptom.
Check the TV, monitor, and HDMI connection
For flicker, black screens, or trouble getting a 4K/120 Hz signal, simplify the connection and verify the display’s capabilities. Sony notes that 4K/120 Hz support is not consistent across the market, so check the exact display model and HDMI port rather than relying only on a broad HDMI 2.1 label.

- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports the resolution and refresh-rate combination you want, and that its firmware is current.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display while testing. Sony’s picture troubleshooting instruction is: “Connect the PS5 console directly to the HDMI port on the screen.” Temporarily remove a receiver, sound bar, or capture device from the path.
- Use the PS5’s supplied HDMI cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Reseat both ends; if the cable may be damaged or unsuitable, try a known-good cable.
- Try the display’s HDMI port specified for high-bandwidth or 4K/120 Hz input, and confirm the feature is enabled in the TV or monitor’s own settings.
- Return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and check the current signal again.
Sony’s PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting also recommends checking the cable and HDMI port and updating display firmware. Replacing a cable is not a frame-rate upgrade: the PS5’s included cable may already be suitable, and a cable cannot improve a game’s internal frame rate.
Consider system software and Safe Mode only when symptoms are broader
If performance or system-feature problems affect the console broadly, check for a PS5 system software update at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony’s manual update instructions are for consoles that have been offline for a long time or when an update has failed; they do not establish that old firmware is the cause of every stutter. Sony’s system software update guidance covers update options.

Sony associates Clear System Software Cache in Safe Mode with system-feature issues or performance drops, so it is the relevant Safe Mode option to consider for broad symptoms. Sony describes Rebuild Database for system-feature problems or cases such as a deleted game icon remaining on Home; it is not documented as a universal stutter fix. See Sony’s Safe Mode instructions before using either option. Safe Mode also offers reset and reinstall options that delete data: do not use those as early troubleshooting steps, and back up your data before any data-erasing action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when to contact the publisher or PlayStation support
- Only one game remains affected: Contact its publisher about reproducible stutter after checking the game’s settings and updates. Sony’s game-launch guidance discusses reinstalling for launch problems, not as a general remedy for frame-rate issues; reinstalling is not an established universal fix for stutter. Sony’s game launch troubleshooting addresses that narrower issue.
- Picture or resolution faults persist across content: Use PlayStation Repairs and hardware support for diagnosis of unresolved console or display-output problems.
ALLM, or Auto Low Latency Mode, is a low-latency feature rather than a frame-rate booster. It works when supported by the TV; check the display manual for its behavior and settings.
