Set up a separate Microsoft account for the child, add it to your family group, and have the child use that account on the console. Then set screen-time limits, review content and online-safety permissions, and decide whether purchases need adult approval. These family controls work with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; you do not need to buy a new console just to use them.
1. Set up the adult and child accounts
Use an adult’s Microsoft account to organize the family group, and create or use a separate Microsoft account for the child. Add the child to the family group through Microsoft Family Safety. The setup may ask for consent or other information based on the child’s age and country, so follow the prompts shown for your region rather than relying on a single age rule.
The family group is what lets you manage settings for the child’s account. Microsoft’s Family Safety setup guide also points to Xbox privacy and online-safety controls.
2. Sign the child into their own Xbox profile
On the console, sign in with the child’s Microsoft account and use that profile for the child’s play. This keeps their activity separate from an adult’s and allows family settings to be tailored to them. Xbox’s family hub describes controls for personalizing each child’s experience.

3. Set screen-time limits and schedules
Use Xbox Family Settings or Microsoft Family Safety to choose limits and schedules that fit your household routine. Microsoft says screen time on Xbox counts while the family member is signed in, so remind the child to sign out when they finish playing. Limits can be managed online or through Microsoft’s app; see Microsoft’s screen-time instructions for current options.
4. Choose content and online-safety settings
Review the child’s content limits and the permissions that shape how they interact with other players. Xbox family controls let parents manage multiplayer, chat, friend requests, clubs and broadcasting. Choose settings for the child’s age, maturity and games rather than assuming one combination is right for every family. The Xbox family hub and Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Safety Toolkit describe family controls and age-suitable settings.

5. Require approval for purchases
If the child should ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox, turn on purchase approval. Microsoft’s documented console route is Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download, then enable Ask a parent. Child or teen account defaults may already enable this. Menu wording can change; if the route differs on your console, look under the child’s family and Xbox privacy settings. See Microsoft’s purchase-approval instructions.

Explain the limits to the child, how to ask for more time or a purchase, and how to report an interaction that makes them uncomfortable. Revisit the settings when their age, games, friends or household schedule changes. The controls apply to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, though the exact console screens may vary; check the current labels in the console or family-settings app.
