For playing optimized Xbox Series X|S games from added storage, choose the Seagate Storage Expansion Card. A compatible USB 3.1 external drive is useful for storing games and freeing console SSD space, but optimized games on USB must be moved to the console’s internal storage or the expansion card before you can play them.

When the Expansion Card is the right choice

The card plugs into the dedicated expansion port and is the straightforward choice if you want optimized Series X|S games to run from your added storage. Xbox describes it as providing additional memory while maintaining the same peak speed and performance as the internal SSD; that is Xbox’s product claim, not an independent comparison of specific drives.

The Xbox product listings showed 1 TB and 2 TB options on the UK page, and 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB on the US page when checked in 2026. These are regional listings, not a guarantee that every capacity is currently available in every market. Check the listing for your region and the retailer’s current price before buying. Xbox notes that price and availability vary by retailer.

When a USB external drive makes sense

A compatible USB 3.1 external HDD can hold games that you are not currently playing, helping preserve internal SSD space. Xbox Wire’s November 6, 2020 storage guide describes keeping an external drive connected to store games and reserving the console SSD for games played most often.

  • SPACE FOR MASSIVE GAMES. With up to 2TB[1] of storage, you have plenty of room to grow your game library and explore massive worlds.

For optimized Series X|S games, treat USB storage as an archive or transfer stop—not as a place to launch the game from. Seagate’s support guidance says those games must be moved to the console’s internal storage or the expansion card for gameplay. So the USB option can suit a large collection you rotate through, but it adds a move-before-play step.

How to choose for your game library

  • Want to install and play optimized games without moving them first? Choose the Expansion Card.
  • Want extra room to keep games stored and are comfortable moving a game before playing it? Consider a compatible USB 3.1 external drive.
  • Comparing value? Compare current local retailer prices against capacity and your preferred workflow. The available evidence does not establish a like-for-like price comparison, and prices vary by market and retailer.

What the Xbox speed figures do—and do not—tell you

Xbox lists 2.4 GB/s raw and 4.8 GB/s compressed I/O throughput for the Series X in its console specifications. Those are console I/O specifications, not a benchmark comparing a particular external drive with the Expansion Card. The practical distinction for this buying decision is supported by the product and support guidance: the card is positioned for direct play at internal-SSD performance, while optimized games stored on USB need to be moved before gameplay.
