Canceling Game Pass does not mean you own or keep playing its catalog games. Xbox says subscribers can access a library game until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until the game leaves the library. A download is not ownership: the game may remain installed, but its subscription access can end. To keep playing a specific title after access ends, you generally need to buy it separately, if a compatible physical edition is available.
Will I lose my games if I cancel Game Pass?
Xbox’s US Game Pass FAQ states: “Game Pass subscribers enjoy access to games in the library until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.” In other words, a Game Pass download is licensed access through the subscription, not a permanent purchase.
Canceling does not necessarily delete the installed files. Xbox’s FAQ does not promise that a game will be removed from your device, though, and an installed copy alone does not restore your entitlement. If access ends, you will need an active plan that includes the game or a separate purchase to play it.
Game availability can also end before your subscription does if a title leaves the catalog. Xbox says library titles and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform, so check the current Game Pass library and plan details for your market.

What if I change or downgrade my plan?
A plan change does not mean every installed or purchased game disappears. It can, however, change which catalog games and subscription features you can access. Xbox’s current lineup includes Ultimate, Premium, Essential, and PC Game Pass, with different libraries and benefits. Before switching, verify that the specific game and features you rely on are included in the plan available where you live.
- Check the game: Look for it in the target plan’s current library and confirm platform compatibility.
- Check the benefits: Compare any plan-specific features you use, such as cloud gaming, multiplayer, or partner benefits.
- Check the cost and renewal date: Use the recurring price and next billing date shown in your account rather than assuming prices are the same across plans or regions.
- Consider a separate purchase: If one particular game is the reason you subscribe, buying that title separately may suit you better. Confirm that the edition works with your console; a physical copy is an option only where a compatible edition exists.
How do I stop Game Pass from renewing?
Manage the subscription through your Microsoft account or Xbox console and switch off recurring billing before the next charge. Xbox’s current FAQ explains how to manage a subscription, but the accessible support information does not establish the precise post-cancellation access timing for every account. Check the status and dates shown in your account before making plans around continued access.

Xbox describes a one-time refund of the most recent recurring charge when cancellation is made within 30 days after payment. This is limited to once per Microsoft account per subscription product; it is not an automatic or universal refund. Review the current terms and eligibility in your account before relying on it.
Will I lose my saves if I cancel?
Your Game Pass access and your save data are separate issues. Xbox’s accessible FAQ does not specify a post-cancellation save-retention period, so it is not safe to promise that saves will remain available indefinitely. Before changing or canceling a plan, confirm that the game has synced your save. If a save is important, consult current Xbox Support for guidance specific to the game and your account.

Does the November 2026 cloud gaming change affect downloaded games?
No: the announced monthly-hour limits apply to cloud gaming, not to playing a downloaded game. In a September 3, 2026 announcement, Xbox said that starting in November 2026, monthly cloud gaming hours would be 15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Xbox estimated the change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. Those figures concern cloud sessions, not how many games subscribers can download or play locally. The announcement said details on additional-hour pricing and availability were still to come; check Xbox’s cloud gaming hours announcement for updates.
