Choose Xbox Series X if you want a disc drive or native 4K gaming; choose Series S if you are happy with digital-only games and a 1440p target; choose a Windows gaming PC if you want PC game access and hardware flexibility and are prepared to match components to the games you play. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on your display, game library, storage needs, and whether you also need a general-purpose computer.

At a glance: what each option is for

Decision Xbox Series X Xbox Series S Windows gaming PC
Display target Native 4K; 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a compatible display. Microsoft comparison Designed for 1440p, with 4K upscaling. Microsoft Series S product page Depends on the selected CPU and GPU, game, settings, and display. Xbox on PC
Physical games and movies The cited configuration includes a UHD Blu-ray disc player; check the exact model because configurations differ. Microsoft product information Digital-only; disc-based games are not compatible. Microsoft Series S product page Optical-drive support depends on the build and software; it is not established as a distinguishing feature in the cited Xbox PC pages.
Storage Configurations vary; a dedicated expansion card adds storage at the console’s custom SSD performance. Microsoft comparison 512GB or 1TB SSD configurations are listed; the dedicated expansion card is supported. Microsoft Series S product page Depends on the selected build and upgrade path; no matched build comparison is established here.

Choose Series X if you want discs or native 4K

Series X is the best fit if you own physical Xbox games, want to buy them used or borrow them, or plan to watch UHD Blu-ray discs. The cited Series X configuration has a UHD Blu-ray drive, while Series S has no disc drive. Verify the exact Series X model before purchase: Microsoft lists more than one storage and disc configuration, including a digital model.

Microsoft identifies Series X as a native 4K console. Its comparison page lists shared support for up to 120 FPS, but 4K at up to 120 FPS depends on the game or other supported content and a compatible display; it is not a guarantee for every title. Both consoles share features such as Quick Resume, Smart Delivery, DirectX ray tracing, variable refresh rate, and support for Xbox One gaming accessories. See Microsoft’s comparison.

Choose Series S if digital-only fits your library

Series S is designed for 1440p output and can upscale to 4K. It may suit a 1440p display, or a 4K display if you are comfortable with upscaling rather than native 4K. It is all-digital: disc-based games cannot be played on it, so account for any physical games you already own before choosing it.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Microsoft lists 512GB and 1TB SSD configurations. Think about the number and size of the games you keep installed, not just how many you own: a larger library may mean uninstalling and reinstalling titles more often. The available configuration and local stock can change, so confirm the capacity on the exact listing. Microsoft Series S details.

When the internal storage is not enough

Both Series X and Series S support a dedicated Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card. Microsoft says it connects through the console’s expansion port and replicates the custom SSD experience at the same performance. Standard USB external hard drives are another storage option, but do not treat every USB drive as equivalent to the dedicated card for running optimized games at that performance. Choose a Windows gaming PC if you want PC games and flexibility

A gaming PC is not one fixed performance tier. You choose the hardware, and results vary with the CPU, graphics card, memory, game, settings, and display. Start with the games and resolution you care about, then select a configuration that meets their requirements. Xbox says its PC app supports Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or higher, but that app requirement does not mean every PC can run every game well: system requirements vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.

PC is a stronger fit if you want native PC game access, want to choose or upgrade hardware, or also need a computer for work, study, or other uses. If you already own a capable PC, compare the specific Xbox games and features you want with what that PC can run before buying another device. No directly comparable, specified PC build price is established here, so a general claim that a gaming PC costs more or less than a console would be misleading.

Play Anywhere and cloud play

Eligible Xbox Play Anywhere games can be bought once and played on Xbox console and PC without another purchase; supported progress, saves, add-ons, and achievements can carry across devices. Eligibility is title-specific, so check the game’s listing rather than assuming every Xbox title is included. Xbox Play Anywhere information.

Cloud streaming can provide another way to access some games on supported devices, but it is not an automatic replacement for owning a console or game. Xbox says cloud play requires a subscription and supported device; some cloud-playable games are sold separately, and the available library varies. Check current terms and the game you want on Xbox’s PC and cloud gaming page.

Account for subscriptions and current prices

Game Pass is an optional recurring subscription, not part of the console hardware price. Xbox describes access to hundreds of games through Game Pass, but tiers, terms, catalog, and prices can change; a console bundle does not necessarily include the subscription. Confirm what is included and the current local price before buying. Xbox console comparison.

There is no reliable current price comparison here between all console configurations and a matched gaming PC build. Microsoft’s price sheet is explicitly dated October 3, 2025, and lists historical U.S. prices: Series S 512GB at $399.99, Series S 1TB at $449.99, Series X Digital at $599.99, Series X at $649.99, and Series X 2TB Galaxy Black at $799.99. Those figures are not a current quote and may not reflect today’s price or availability. Check current local listings for the exact configuration.

A quick decision checklist

  • Pick Series X if physical Xbox games or UHD Blu-rays matter, or native 4K is a priority.
  • Pick Series S if digital-only gaming works for you, and its 1440p/upscaling approach and storage capacity suit your setup.
  • Pick a Windows gaming PC if you want native PC games and configurable hardware, and are willing to choose components around your target games and display.
  • If you already have a capable PC, check game-by-game compatibility and the Xbox features you would gain before buying a second system.

For a separate PC feature rather than a general gaming recommendation, Xbox Wire’s July 22, 2026 post gives requirements for early-release support for four original Xbox games on PC. Its minimum listed GPU options are GTX 950, Radeon RX 550, or Intel Arc A310, with a four-core/eight-thread CPU, 8GB RAM, and Windows 11. Those are requirements for that backward-compatibility feature, not a general minimum for modern PC gaming. Xbox Wire feature details.
