Neither weight is best for everyone. In one FPS-style target-acquisition study, players performed better with 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with a 100 g mouse. A separate study of professional gamers found no statistically significant difference between 80 g and 87 g mice. A lighter mouse is worth trying if quick target acquisition matters to you, but the evidence does not show that it will automatically improve your aim or make gaming more comfortable.
What the studies say about mouse weight and aim
One target-acquisition task favored three lighter weights over 100 g
In a 2022 study published in Applied Ergonomics, 72 video-game players completed an FPS-style target-acquisition task using mice weighing 50 g, 60 g, 90 g, and 100 g. Participants were 4% faster and 9% more accurate with the 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with the 100 g mouse. The study did not establish that 50 g was better than 60 g or 90 g, or that the same advantage carries over to every game or playing situation. Read the study record.
A small study of professional players found no significant difference between 80 g and 87 g
A 2023 study involving 16 professional gamers compared 80 g and 87 g mice and found no statistically significant differences between the weights. The researchers also varied wired and wireless connections, so connection-related findings should not be treated as evidence about mouse weight. Read the study; the Berkeley publication record reproduces the authors’ conclusion: “No statistically significant differences between mouse weight were found.”
These results answer different questions: one found an advantage for several weights over 100 g in a specific aiming task; the other detected no difference between two relatively close weights among a small group of professional players. Neither identifies one ideal weight for all players.

Does a lighter mouse improve aim?
It may help in some aiming tasks, but the available findings do not justify a blanket promise. The target-acquisition result supports trying a lighter mouse if rapid movement between targets is important to you. It does not prove that the lightest available model will produce the best results, or that a result from a controlled task predicts performance across live FPS matches, other genres, or different sensitivity settings.
Mouse weight is also only one part of the setup. Shape and hand fit, grip style, sensitivity, and whether a game calls for repeated large flicks or sustained tracking can all affect how a mouse feels to control. The cited studies do not establish how each of these factors changes performance, so treat them as practical comparison points rather than proven explanations for the study results.

Is a heavier gaming mouse more comfortable?
There is no basis in these studies for saying that a heavier mouse is inherently more comfortable, or that a lighter mouse prevents fatigue or injury. The studies did not establish long-term comfort outcomes. Comfort is personal, and weight alone cannot tell you whether a mouse’s shape, size, or grip will suit your hand.
Consider how the mouse fits your hand and grip, how controlled it feels during the movements you make, and how it feels over the length and type of gaming session you typically play. These are sensible things to assess when choosing a mouse, but they are not long-term comfort effects proven by the cited studies.

How to choose a mouse weight for FPS
- Start with your priority. If quick target acquisition is a priority, testing a lighter mouse is reasonable; if very low mass feels less controlled to you, a heavier model is also a valid choice.
- Compare similar shapes where possible. Shape and hand fit can change your experience, so comparing models with similar shapes can help you avoid attributing every difference to weight.
- Keep the rest of the setup in mind. Consider grip style, sensitivity, and whether your play relies more on repeated large flicks or controlled tracking.
- Try the mouse in the kind of session you care about. A brief first impression cannot establish long-term comfort; consider how it feels across your usual game and session length.
- Check whether the weight can be adjusted. An adjustable-weight model gives you another option if you are uncertain about the mass you prefer.
This is a practical way to compare options, not a testing protocol validated by the cited studies. Where possible, keep shape and sensor setup similar while comparing weights.
