Both PS5 disc and digital games install game data to console storage. A disc does not let you play directly from the disc: keep it inserted whenever you launch that game. A digital game must be downloaded, which requires internet access and an account sign-in, but purchased and downloaded games can be played offline on a PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, subject to the game’s own features and license conditions.
How installation differs between disc and digital games
| What to expect | Disc game | Digital game |
|---|---|---|
| How it gets onto the console | Insert the disc and the game installs automatically the first time you play it. | Purchase and download it, such as from PlayStation Store. The console must be connected to the internet and signed in to an account to purchase and download games. |
| Storage used | Game data installs to console storage; the disc does not eliminate the storage requirement. | The downloaded game is stored on console storage. |
| What you need to launch it | The disc must be in the drive every time you play. | The game must be downloaded, and access depends on its account and license setup. Offline play is available on a PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. |
PlayStation’s disc installation guidance describes automatic installation on first play and requires the disc to remain inserted for later play. Its PS5 Quick Start Guide says internet access and account sign-in are needed to purchase and download games.

If the disc game has two discs
Some games use a data disc and a play disc. Swap discs when the console prompts you during installation, then leave the play disc inserted after installation completes.
When a PS5 game needs the internet
Disc games
PlayStation’s cited disc-install instructions do not state that internet is required for the basic installation from disc. That does not establish that every game can be installed and played fully offline: a title may need an update or internet for online features, and requirements differ by game.

Digital games
Internet access and account sign-in are required to purchase and download a digital game. After it has downloaded, a purchased game can be played offline on the PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. PlayStation says this setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. Offline access does not make a game’s online modes available without a connection, and access to subscription content can depend on the owner’s sharing setup and an active PlayStation Plus subscription. See PlayStation’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guidance for the setting and its conditions.
What storage each format uses—and what USB storage can do
Disc and digital games both occupy console storage. A disc is not a substitute for space on the console, while a digital game must be downloaded to storage before it is ready to play.

PlayStation’s PS5 setup guidance distinguishes extended USB storage by game generation: PS4 games can be stored and played from an extended USB drive, but PS5 games cannot be played from extended storage. The guidance does not establish the full range of internal expansion options, so do not treat a generic USB drive as a way to play PS5 games from external storage.
If space runs short, PlayStation says its app can be used to manage internal storage and download purchased digital games to the console. Individual game sizes vary; check the current game listing and console storage rather than relying on a general size or installation-time estimate.

Which PS5 models can play discs?
A PS5 console with a disc drive supports compatible PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray disc, as well as digital downloads. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive by default, so it plays games by download unless a compatible optional drive is added.
PlayStation’s current PS5 product information identifies the CFI-ZDD1 series optional disc drive for slim Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. The drive is sold separately, and pairing it with the console during setup requires an internet connection. Do not assume that every Digital Edition—including the original CFI-1000 model—is compatible. Check the console’s exact model marking and the regional product listing before buying a drive.

- The story, characters, voice acting, gameplay, and music that made the original a sensation return, remade for modern consoles
- This evolutionary leap breathes new life into every cutscene, and rebuilds every corner of the world
- Incredible new graphics bring the wild growth of the jungles, forests, and swamps to life in exquisite detail
- Characters are rendered in fine detail so that facial wrinkles, pores, & separate eye & iris movements are visible, allowing for rich animations
- Any injuries to his actual body will leave their mark permanently, telling a story of each player's unique journey
Choosing the format for your situation
- Choose disc when you have a compatible drive and want to use physical game discs. Expect the game to install to console storage and require the disc at launch.
- Choose digital when you prefer downloading games and do not need a disc drive. Plan for internet access and account sign-in to purchase and download; offline play can be enabled for purchased and downloaded games on one PS5.
- If you already own a Digital Edition, check its exact model before considering the optional CFI-ZDD1 drive; only the listed CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition groups are identified as compatible by PlayStation.
- If storage is the concern, neither format avoids console storage use. Extended USB storage can play PS4 games, not PS5 games.
The available official guidance does not establish a universal price advantage, game-size difference, installation speed, or bandwidth requirement for either format. Those depend on the title, market, and connection.
